CENTREVILLE — Three teens of a quartet described by local police as “four best friends” remain in jail this week on charges they conspired to and then successfully killed the fourth in Centreville Saturday.

Darrius Morris, 18, of Centreville, died Saturday after he was shot on Mangum Street in the Ash Quarters neighborhood at approximately 3 a.m.

Centreville Police Chief Jimmy Ray Reese said the apparent single shot that killed Morris likely came from a rifle, though no gun have been recovered and the police have not yet received an autopsy.

Witness statements likewise affirm the belief a rifle was used, he said.

By Saturday evening, the police had arrested Roman Gaulden, 16, of Kenner, and LaKendrick Washington, 14, and Andrew Collins, 18, both of Centreville, on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Reese said the three argued with Morris Friday evening, but prior to the shooting the teens had all been friends.

During their initial court appearance, Centreville Municipal Judge David S. Crawford set bond for all three suspects at $250,000.

The teens are all being charged as adults.

“When a juvenile uses a weapon in a crime, they just made themselves an adult,” Reese said.

A preliminary hearing for the case has been set for July 21. The suspects are being housed in the Amite County jail.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations and the Wilkinson County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the case, Reese said.
