Harrisonburg, La. — Investigators still don’t know why she was killed, but Catahoula Parish law enforcement officials identified the woman whose remains were found buried in a cornfield turn row near Sicily Island late last month.

Catahoula Parish Sheriff James Kelly said the partial remains discovered June 26 have been identified as Gwendolyn McIntosh, 29, of Sterlington.

“The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab had gathered enough remains to extract DNA,” Kelly said. “Because the victim had prior arrests, her DNA was on file and they matched the remains that were found to the DNA file bank and came up with a match.”

Two suspects, Daniel White, 36, of Sterlington, and Leah Marie Pontiff, 30, of Monroe, have been arrested in connection with the case.

White is charged with second-degree kidnapping, while Pontiff faces a charge of obstruction of justice.

Kelly said investigators have not been able to reliably establish a motive for the crime. The suspects knew McIntosh, Kelly said.

“We know they were involved, and we are still in the process of gathering information and are hopeful we can up the charges on both of our suspects,” he said.

“We just have to speculate right now. The question that begs to be answered is, ‘Why did they do this?’ We are just not sure of that.”

Kelly said the sheriff’s office had spoken with McIntosh’s mother.

“We were glad to get this ID for the family’s sake, anyway,” he said. “We have spoken to the victim’s family, and at least she was able to get a little bit of closure on that.”

After McIntosh’s remains were discovered — Pontiff initially led investigators with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office to the field — investigators looked for a second burial site, but have been unable to locate it, Kelly said.

Pontiff is being detained in the Catahoula Parish on a $250,000 bond.

White’s bond has been set at $475,000. He was being held in the Ouachita Parish jail on unrelated charges at the time of his arrest, but has since been transferred to Catahoula Parish.
