Hut, hut, hike to Pigskins and Pearls

If you are interested in learning a little bit about football, or if you enjoy “tailgating” food, or if you just want to spend an afternoon with a great group of football loving women, then you need to be at Cathedral’s cafeteria at 6 p.m. Aug. 14 for Cathedral’s third annual Pigskins and Pearls.

The purpose of Pigskins and Pearls is to allow the “girls” to get together and learn a little bit about football and to celebrate the moms behind the football players and the women behind the coaches.

For we all know, it is really the women that actually make this great sport work.

I’ll be the first to admit that I do not know enough about football.

For the past 16 years, I’ve hardly ever missed a game, been to numerous practices, watched tons of film and had to listen to my husband on the phone for hours talking about football. A lot of what he talks about is way over my head, but I have come to have a good basic understanding of the game.

A couple of years ago, I was shocked to talk to mothers of high school football players that had little to no knowledge of the game. Some of them didn’t even know what position their son played. So Pigskins and Pearls was created to allow us girls a chance to come together in a laid back environment to learn more about football.

Who better to teach us about the X’s and O’s than our own coach Ron Rushing?

This year Coach Rushing will give us a review of summer camps, workouts and 7 on 7s, as well as a preview of our upcoming season.

He will highlight our team’s strengths and give us his expectations of the Greenwave this fall. Then, he will give us a brief lesson on the importance of defensive and offensive linemen. Quarterback and receiver names are the ones that get called over those loud speakers at D’Evereux Stadium on Friday nights, but those skill players are able to do their job because of the guys on the line making plays and blocking for them.

Then after we have enjoyed our lesson from Coach Rushing, it will be time to recognize some of the great women that help make our Greenwave so successful. We will acknowledge the coach’s wives for all the sacrifices they make for the good of our team. We will then spend time honoring the senior mothers of our Greenwave team. Last but not least, we will have several door prizes to give away from our wonderful Greenwave supporters.

Tickets for this event can be purchased for $10 at Just 4 You Monogramming, which is next door to Sports Center, prior to the event and even at the door. T-shirts can also be ordered for $15 at Just 4 You until July 31. This will enable us to be able to distribute them at Cathedral’s final registration. All proceeds from the night will go to Cathedral’s C Club, which helps support our athletic programs.

As women, we are all going through different seasons in our lives, but one thing we have in common is we are all about to be right in the middle of football season.

Go buy your tickets and order your T-shirts now for Cathedral’s Pigskins and Pearls, which will be at 6 p.m. Aug. 14 at Cathedral cafeteria.

We would love to have you there to enjoy a few laughs and maybe even some tears, as we honor the women that keep the winning tradition of Greenwave football alive.
