NATCHEZ — Every dog has its day, and Treasure is looking for hers in the Wahl Dirty Dog Challenge.

The challenge is a Facebook contest to support animal rescue operations with a $5,000 grant.

The contest shows before and after photos of dogs that were down on their luck, and people vote for which dog had the best recovery wins.

Treasure, a two-year old miniature poodle, is the entry representing the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society.

“Her hair coat was so dirty, thick and matted that she could not walk,” said Kathy Fitch, President of the Board of NACHS.

Fitch said what happened with Treasure is common for longhaired dogs, such as poodles and shih tzus, if they are not taken care of properly.

“People should think carefully about those extra responsibilities before deciding to acquire a pup of that type,” Fitch said.

Currently, Treasure has nearly 200 votes, and the top dog is nearly 3,000 votes above her.

NACHS board Vice President Sue Stedman said she was not counting Treasure out just yet.

“It’s just going to depend on how involved the community will get, and to keep voting for her,” Stedman said. “Please, just put a note on your phone and vote for her every day.”

Second and third place pups will bring $1,000 to their rescuers.

The contest is in partnership with the organization One Picture Saves a Life, an organization built around teaching animal caretakers how to best groom and photograph a dog to get attention on social media.

“It’s always rewarding when you get one that comes in like that, and you can clean them up and turn their lives around,” Stedman said. “Treasure was obviously in terrible condition when we got her, but she definitely stands on having a wonderful life once we get her out.”

Fitch said she is not as optimistic about Treasure’s chances, but the contest was still great for Treasure. A local family who saw her on the Wahl page adopted the poodle.

The contest runs until Thursday, and those interested in voting can visit bit.ly/DirtyDogsContest2014.
