Vidalia — The Trinity Episcopal Day School Lady Saints softball team got off to a rough start in the first game of a doubleheader against Amite School Center that they couldn’t bounce back from as they fell 12-4.

The Lady Saints gave up five early runs in the top of the first inning that decided the game early.

Tali Beard would score the Lady Saints’ only run through the first four innings.

Trinity head coach Miranda Smith said they had a hard time getting the bats to come alive against ASC pitcher Klanci Fair.

Fair recorded 10 strikeouts in the first game.

“We had way to many strikeouts,” Smith said. “We were not being aggressive at all.”

But Trinity had a change of pace in the fifth inning, and it started with Beard scoring the first run before Sloan Young hit hard to the outfield for a double before scoring on a passed ball the next play, 7-3.

The Lady Saints would score once more when Hannah Fitt singled to bring in Kailey Hutchins, 7-4, but it was all the offense Trinity could generate.

Trinity’s defense broke down with a string of errors in the top of the sixth inning to allow ASC to slip away with five more runs to end the firs game 12-4.

“When someone starts hitting, it’s contagious and everyone starts hitting,” Smith said. “But we can’t start the first inning off giving up four runs.”

Trinity 7, ASC 6

It seemed like an entirely different team showed up to Game Two for Trinity, as the Lady Saints came out swinging early to split the doubleheader with a 7-6 win.

The Lady Saints manage to stir up four runs of their own in the first inning.

ASC returned in the bottom of the first with two runs as well, but Trinity came out in the top of the second with an equally matched inning, scoring three runs.

Those seven runs were all Trinity needed to seal the ball game.

“I told my players (the second game) was a much better effort,” Smith said. “I told them we weren’t playing to our full potential, we were making mental mistakes and errors, and they need to not think so much it needs to be instinct.

“We put the ball in play, and that’s the only way to win.”

Trinity will head to the Amite School Center tournament this weekend with its first game at 8 a.m. Saturday against Centreville Academy.
