BROOKHAVEN — Tyler Caston and Casey Haygood accounted for five of Centreville Academy’s seven touchdowns as the Tigers defeated the Brookhaven Academy Cougars 49-14 Friday night.

Caston had all three of his touchdowns on special teams returns. He got Centreville rolling right off the bat with an 87-yard opening kickoff return, and Brock Andrus’ extra point was good, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead just 14 seconds into the game.

Just over two minutes later, Caston was at it again, this time returning a punt 58 yards for a touchdown for a 14-0 Centreville lead. And appropriately, Caston scored the final touchdown of the game on a 68-yard punt return with 1:48 remaining.

After Brookhaven Academy scored two touchdowns against the Tigers’ second team players to make it a 28-14 game with 8:40 to go in the third quarter, head coach Bill Hurst wasted no time putting the starters, including quarterback Casey Haygood, back in the game to make sure the Cougars would get no closer.

And it turned out to be a sound strategy. Haygood scored on a 4-yard run with 11:17 to go in the game and hooked up with John Marcus McDowell on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 5:29 left.

Haygood completed five of nine passes for 128 yards with one interception. Chase Hughes had eight rushes for 64 yards and a touchdown while Ian Ball had seven caries for 48 yards and touchdown.

Tyler Caston had one catch for 31 yards on offense and an interception on defense. Matthew Parnell led the team in tackles with eight and David Carmichael added seven tackles. Will Richmond had an interception of his own.

Connor Dorman accounted for both of the Cougars’ touchdowns — one passing and one rushing.

Centreville Academy (1-0) next plays at Trinity Episcopal at 7 p.m. Friday.

Franklin Co. gets rough start to 2014 season

BROOKHAVEN — It was a rough start to the 2014 season for Franklin County and first-year head coach Anthony Hart as the Bulldogs lost to the Brookhaven High School Panthers 33-12 Friday night.

Trey McDaniel had a three-yard touchdown run, the first of his two four-yard touchdown runs, in the second quarter and finished with 142 yards on 21 carries to lead Brookhaven’s rushing attack.

When Franklin County had the ball, the Bulldogs could not get on track against the Panthers’ physical defense and was held to 198 total yards of offense with just eight first downs.

Benard Selmon had 16 carries for 78 yards and both of the Bulldogs’ touchdowns. De’Matre Collins completed both of his passes he attempted to Selmon for 70 yards

Michael White led Franklin County on defense with 10 tackles ,while Terrance Lane had nine tackles and Deanthony King had seven tackles.
