Join us to become a life-long learner

Fall is a busy and exciting time.

The “back to school” spirit seems to seep into everything, and luckily, this season does not just have to be for those traditional students working towards graduation or a degree.

There are many opportunities at Copiah-Lincoln Community College to continue your education, learn new skills or develop existing interests and hobbies through our Special Interest Program.

Everyone in the community needs to be aware of and take advantage of this program.

Co-Lin is dedicated to the health and growth of its community and strives to be a leader in Natchez by offering opportunities for continuous improvement for its faculty, staff, students and the community at large. One of Co-Lin’s goals is to “include adult basic education, continuing education and community service programs for individuals striving for personal growth and/or enrichment.”

Our special interest classes cover a wide range of topics, including computer skills, social media training, new languages, culinary arts, history, health, the arts and more. These casual classes are offered at low cost and promise to be stress free with no tests involved. I repeat — no tests.

This program is geared toward having fun while becoming a life-long learner. All classes are face-to-face with a “hands on” approach, designed for personal enrichment, learning new skills or just plain fun.

Some courses offered will give people the opportunity to enhance or develop those skills that prospective employers are putting more emphasis on and expect to see on a resume. Examples of these classes are, social media, intro to computer and Spanish for beginners.

Tai Chi and a “Walking Live” class will be offered for those looking to improve their health and well-being. Other courses will allow participants to indulge their personal interests, like the causes and consequences of WWI or perspectives on 18th and 19th century musical styles. And of course there will be opportunities to expand or create new passions, such as oil painting, intro to interior design, knife skills and soups, salads and sauces.

There will also be another chance for veterans to get more details about the benefits available to them.

Classes are available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights this fall. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for some classes.

For more details on classes available, please visit our website, colin.edu, or contact me at 601-446-1103 or by email at emily.edwards@colin.edu. Pre-registration is required for all courses (with the exception of benefits available to veterans).

All courses must meet a minimum number of participants to prevent cancellation. You may also register at the Willie Mae Dunn Library on the Co-Lin Natchez campus. So don’t wait until the last minute to register. If a class is cancelled for any reason, full refunds will be available.

I would also like to welcome your feedback. This is program created for you.

If you have any comments on a past class you have taken or suggestions for future classes, please let me know. You may email or call with your suggestions using the contact information above. For your convenience, there is also a suggestion box located in the Willie Mae Dunn Library.

On behalf of the Co-Lin family, I invite you to take full advantage of this opportunity and take the time to explore, to create and to discover why Copiah-Lincoln Community College is “the place to be” for you.

Emily Edwards is the learning resources coordinator at Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
