VIDALIA — A new chapter will be written in Vidalia and Ferriday’s storied rivalry Saturday night in Vidalia’s jamboree.

This year, Ferriday and Vidalia get the entire jamboree to themselves.

The junior varsity squads will square off at 6 p.m. with two 10-minute running quarters, and the varsity teams will play at 7 p.m. with two regulation quarters followed by an overtime period regardless if the game is tied or not.

“The idea there is to get the kids used to the overtime rules and used to the situation so if ever an overtime game occurs during the regular season, they have some experience with it,” said Vidalia head coach Jeff Hancock.

The 2014 Vidalia jamboree offers some favorable matchups for both sides. Hancock is worried about covering Ferriday’s J’Shon Foster, a 6’5” wide receiver that can climb vertically and snag balls out of the air.

“They’re awfully athletic,” Hancock said. “They try to get the rock to that big, tall receiver. He’s a big target, and obviously, he’s going to be a big part of their offense.”

Ferriday head coach Cleothis Cummings said Vidalia’s running game, which was showcased against LaSalle High School last Thursday, could cause problems for his defense.

“Vidalia looks pretty good, man,” Cummings said. “Coach Hancock is doing a good job with them. They ran the ball well against LaSalle. Their offensive line knocked LaSalle off the ball, and if they can do that against us, we’ll be in trouble.”

Though pride is on the line and both teams will fight hard for the victory Saturday night, Hancock said this is just another step for his Vikings to progress.

“I told my kids I’m more worried about us getting better right now,” Hancock said. “I’m more worried about beating them in the regular season. If we can focus on getting better everyday, everything else will take care of itself.”
