Cathedral readies for district play

NATCHEZ — Head coach Ron Rushing and the Cathedral Green Wave are sitting at 2-0, but they don’t see things that way.

The Green Wave open up district play Friday against Bogue Chitto (1-1) at home and Cathedral is viewing the game like a season opener.

“We are looking at it like we are 0-0 right now,” Rushing said. “We scheduled a tough front end of the season to get us ready for district. We are kind of looking at this as the start of our season.”

Cathedral took care of business the first two weeks, taking down St. Aloysius and Madison St. Joseph, but now with district play beginning, Rushing alluded there is no bigger game than Friday.

“That first district game is huge, no matter who you play,” Rushing said. “We’re excited to get it going.”

Bogue Chitto comes to town off a 46-40 win over Enterprise last Friday, and Rushing knows that being prepared for the Bobcats is imperative.

“They are a young team that has done well in the past,” he said. “Tradition-wise, they are good. They play hard and are well coached. Going into this game, we are going to have to play well.”

Cathedral’s latest game, a 34-7 win over St. Joe, has the team up and Rushing has taken note.

“I think they are excited,” he said. “We just keep preaching to them that we have to keep working hard every day at practice and improve on things we aren’t doing well. For the most part, I think the guys are excited.”

The latest Green Wave win also revealed an offense that is beginning to balance itself out, with Cathedral rushing for 205 yards and passing for 194.

“I’d love to be 50-50 every game, but the first game we were just running the ball well and didn’t have to throw it,” Rushing said of his team going over the 400 yard mark in their game with St. Al. “I think we are going to be a balanced team throughout the year for the most part.”

Three Cathedral players that will be an integral part of that balanced attack are quarterback Wyatt Boothe, running back Dee Fleming and wide receiver Jardarius Anderson.

Boothe, who completed 13 of his 17 passes for 194 yards against St. Joe, has begun to settle into the offense.

“He is really starting to understand what we are going to do offensively,” Rushing said. “He did a good job and is starting to get the tempo up.”

One of his main targets will be Anderson, who put on a show last Friday scoring two touchdowns.

“We’ve got to find ways to get him the ball,” Rushing said. “We move him around a lot, and we know he has the potential to make big plays. He catches the ball really well downfield and our guys know when he touches it, he can go score. He can give a spark to the team.”

Finally Fleming, who ran for 91 yards last Friday and two touchdowns, while also catching two passes for 41 yards, will be a weapon out of the backfield for the Green Wave.

Cathedral and Bogue Chitto are set for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.
