NATCHEZ — The Vidalia Vikings could be without one of its main starters heading into the first game of the season.

The status of quarterback and running back Johnny Anderson, who injured his shoulder in the jamboree against Ferriday, is still unknown at this point. With the season opener coming up Friday, an away contest against Delhi High School, Vidalia head coach Jeff Hancock may be limited in his choice for starting quarterback.

“This is why we get more than one guy prepared for a position,” Hancock said. “Cole (Cangemi) can run the offense. Cole and Johnny do a lot of the same things well.”

Landon Seyfarth is an option at quarterback for the Vikings, as well.

With or without Anderson, the Vikings are going to show a little more variety offensively. Hancock saved plays and formations for the season opener, going against a Delhi team that showcases four different defensive formations.

“They could cause a problem for us on offense because we’re not sure how they will come out,” Hancock said. “They use a 4-4, 4-3 and 5-3 double eagle at times.”

The Vikings’ defense will have to stop a mobile quarterback in Delhi’s Christian Powell. Hancock said Delhi have the capability to spread the ball out, dispersing it to athletic skill players or allowing Powell to make big plays with his legs or feet.

Hancock said his defense has to wrap up better, and the offense must have less breakdowns along the offensive line in terms of blocking assignments, both of which led to Ferriday jumping out on Vidalia and winning the jamboree 24-0. Execution will play a large factor in the results of Friday’s matchup.

“Delhi has athletes like Ferriday, but the biggest difference between them and Ferriday is their athletes aren’t 6-foot-5,” Hancock said.

The Vikings and the Bears will kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday.
