A variety of events will be hosted Saturday throughout downtown Natchez in conjunction with Second Saturday.

At 2 p.m., Turning Pages bookstore will host story time for area children who will hear a tale relating to the annual “Hug a Book” week, which is this week.

From 3 to 5 p.m., children are invited to express their creative side by creating works of art on the sidewalk by the Natchez Art Association with chalk.

Natchez Downtown Development Association spokeswoman Yvonne Murray said the event would be a great one to allow children to express their creativity.

“There will be artists there to help them with their drawings and provide some supervision or just direction,” Murray said. “It should be a fun time.”

Natchez Art Association is located at 118 N. Pearl St.

From 6 to 8 pm., The Jazzers will provide musical entertainment with the tunes of music from the Big Band genre.

The band will play in front of the Receivable Solutions building at 422 Main St., at the corner of Main and Commerce streets.

“We’re encouraging everyone to bring their chairs, sit and listen to the great music,” Murray said. “We think everyone will enjoy the sound.”

Also from 6 to 8 p.m., various businesses throughout downtown will keep their doors open longer for the monthly Second Saturday event. The business will offer refreshments and stay open later for customers.

Hats and gloves with tea

The Edna B. and Joyce Fay Washington Breast Cancer Foundation Inc. and Natchez Regional Medical Center will host the fifth annual “Hats and gloves with tea on the Mississippi” from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Natchez Grand Hotel.

The event serves as a fundraiser to help fund the “Journey to save a life” program, which provides medically underserved women in the Miss-Lou an opportunity to receive a mammogram.

This year’s guest presenter is Sally-Ann Roberts, who co-anchors the morning news program WWL-TV in New Orleans.

The cost to attend is $25 and includes musical entertainment by Erica Danielle Davis.

Community fraud prevention

The Southwest Mississippi Planning and Development District will present “Community fraud prevention, health and resource event” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Natchez Convention Center.

The event is intended to help raise awareness about fraud prevention and will provide community members with information from a wide array of vendors.

The event is free and open to the public.

Library lecture

The Concordia Parish Library will host a three-evening series continuing tonight revolving around former Louisiana Gov. Huey P. Long.

Georgiann Potts, who is a retired professor at the University of Louisiana-Monroe, will use a film and book by William Ivy Hair, “The Kingfish and His Realm,” as material for a series of discussions on Long and his impact on Louisiana.

The discussions will begin at 6 p.m. today at the Vidalia Library and will continue Sept. 18.

Friday Forum

This week’s topic includes City of Natchez issues with representatives from the Natchez Board of Aldermen.

The weekly forum begins at 8 a.m. at Natchez Coffee Company.
