WINNSBORO, La. — The Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints needed a win over top-ranked and defending MAIS Class A state champion Franklin Academy Tuesday afternoon to keep their postseason hopes alive.

However, the Lady Cougars had other ideas. Kassie Shipley held Trinity Episcopal to just four hits and Tyler Robinson hit two doubles as they defeated the Lady Saints 12-2 in five innings in District 7-A action.

“As far as the final score is concerned, the difference was our five errors to their no errors,” Trinity head coach Miranda Smith said.

Shipley pitched all five innings and had six strikeouts to go with three walks.

“Our hitters didn’t adjust to the speed of their pitcher,” Smith said. “After we’ve seen her once, I would have thought they would have adjusted.”

After the Lady Saints scored one run in the top of the first inning, the Lady Cougars scored two runs each in the bottom of the first and second innings to take a 4-1 lead.

Trinity tried to stay in the game after plating one run in the top of the third inning, but once again Franklin Academy had a response — one run in the bottom of the third, two runs in the bottom of the fourth and five runs in the bottom of the fifth that put the 10-runs-after-five inning mercy rule in play.

“We didn’t have the hits that they did. But (our players) put up a heck of an effort,” Smith said. “They had a few miscues. But their effort was far better than the final score indicated.”

The loss dropped the Lady Saints into a tie with Tallulah Academy for second place in District 7-A. And because the two teams split during the regular season, the tiebreaker and a berth in the Class A South State Tournament will go to the Lady Trojans because they defeated Trinity by six runs while the Lady Saints won their game by only four runs.

Trinity Episcopal (10-12, 4-3) will finish its season at 6 p.m. today when it hosts Tensas Academy at the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex in Vidalia.

ACCS at Amite School Center postponed

LIBERTY — Adams County Christian School’s varsity softball game at Amite School Center late Tuesday afternoon was postponed because of lightning and heavy rain in the Liberty area.

The game will resume at Amite School Center at 1 p.m. Thursday with ACCS leading 2-0. The winner of this game will determine who ACCS will play in the Class AA South State Tournament that begins Saturday.

Tensas Academy 11, WCCA 2

ST. JOSEPH, La. — Bailey Keyes held WCCA to just five hits in a complete-game performance as the Tensas Academy Lady Chiefs defeated the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams 11-2 Tuesday afternoon in an MAIS District 7-A game.

Keyes struck out two batters and walked none to pick the win. Three of those hits she gave up came off the bat of WCCA catcher Olivia Hurst, who finished 3-for-4.

“They had a great defensive game. We had five errors at crucial times. It was a better game than the score indicates,” Lady Rams head coach Jessie Toney said.

WCCA (overall record N/A) finished 0-8 in District 7-A.

Franklin County 11, Hazlehurst 2

MEADVILLE — Alyssa Case went 2-for-4 with a double and winning pitcher Shelly Case helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 as the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs overcame a slow start to defeat Hazlehurst 11-2 Tuesday night in an MHSAA Division 7-3A game.

Hazlehurst out-hit Franklin County 11 to 10, but the Lady Indians were done in by eight errors. The visiting team scored one run in the top of the second inning and again in the top of the third inning to take a surprising 2-0 lead.

After the Lady Bulldogs scored one run in the bottom of the third inning, they took the lead for good with a two-run rally in the bottom of the fourth.
