Rogel, Trinity looking for continued success

NATCHEZ — If rallying to score three touchdowns to defeat Porter’s Chapel last Friday was a sign of things to come, Trinity head coach Zach Rogel will gladly accept.

By his own admittance, though, the Saints should have never won that game.

“We had three fumbles in the red zone and had eight total in the game,” said Rogel on his Saints’ 32-25 win. “You’re not supposed to win a game with that type of turnover margin against you. We rallied back, though, and won a wild one.”

It took a fiery Rogel at halftime to ignite a spark in Trinity. After Cade Wells fumbled in the red zone following his one-handed grab, Rogel got in the face of his star athlete.

“I’ve known Cade for a long time, just from coaching him in track and baseball,” Rogel said. “I think he would agree with me that he had a poor performance in the first half, and I jumped all over him, knowing he would respond.”

Wells would go on to finish the game with four total touchdowns, including the game-winning 3-yard run with 14 seconds left.

As Rogel’s attention turns to Prairie View Academy tonight, he hopes the comeback win serves as a turning point in the season, giving his group the confidence they lacked after going 0-2.

“I think it shows that we’re capable of something,” said Rogel, whose Saints are now 2-2 on the season. “If we take it and run with it, it could be a big moment for us.”

Prairie View poses a threat to derail Trinity’s momentum with a team that’s compromised of nine seniors and nine juniors, compared to Trinity’s three seniors and one junior. The Spartans, who are 1-3 on the year, run a multiple offense and a 4-4 defense, which will dare Trinity to pass against.

Rogel won’t take his eyes off of the run.

“We have to establish the run first and then work our passing game after that,” Rogel said.

The Saints will take on Prairie View at home at 7 p.m.
