NATCHEZ — The Natchez-Adams County Humane Society anticipates breaking ground on a new facility “very soon.”

“We are in the process of finalizing a few details,” said Humane Society Board Member Sue Stedman.

“We don’t actually have the contracts completely signed off on, but we don’t think it will be too much longer,” she said.

One of the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society’s largest fundraisers of the year, Bark in the Park, is today at the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians.

Gates open at 11 a.m. Contests begin at 11:30 a.m. Admission is $5, $1 for children age 5 and under.

The location of the new facility will be on Liberty Road, near the Humane Society’s current location.

“If you go past that, then right on the left, just before you get to the St. Catherine Creek bridge, it’s there,” Stedman said. “We are actually operating the quarantine shelter there now.”

Stedman said the Humane Society is in the final stages of negotiating a contract for the construction of the shelter.

“It’s been a long process, and I know people are frustrated, but no more than we are. We had to go back and make some changes, but we feel like we’re really close,” she said.

Construction will likely take six months to complete.

“One of the nice things is, the way we expect it to go up, we will be inside it quickly,” Stedman said.
