Runnin’ Rebels: ACCS Lady Rebels use speed to advantage

The Adams County Christian School girls basketball team gives opponents little time to catch their breath.

The Lady Rebels pride themselves on getting up and down the court, and head coach Melanie Hall expects to do quite a bit of it this season.

“I feel like we are at our best when we run the floor, using the speed that we have,” Hall said.

The Lady Rebels are coming off a big year where they finished fourth at the South State tournament and made it to the state tournament. But things will look different this season, as Hall tries to find the right combination with a young team.

“Our center is our one senior, and we’ve got another who tore her ACL and MCL and isn’t able to play,” she said. “Then we have two juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen. We are very young, but they are a very together group. They work well.”

The Lady Rebels were a well-oiled machine in their opening game of the ACCS Tip-Off tournament Monday as they easily handled WCCA 61-19.

ACCS shot the ball well early, racking up 28 first quarter points. Moreover, a good chunk came from behind the three-point line, which Hall hopes can play an integral part in their offense.

“We had several of our girls go to camps this past summer,” she said. “This summer, putting in the extra time outside of practice time, that is where you get it.”

The Lady Rebels also controlled the floor defensively, with a seemingly unbreakable full court press early on, that allowed them to jump out to a 17-0 run to open the game.

Guards Bailey Boyd and Mackenzie Boyd, who scored eight and seven points in the game, respectively, will be the spark plugs on offense. Hall said she knew coming into the season that guard play would be critical.

“We’re blessed there,” she said. “I knew before the season started that how we were going to go would depend on how our guards would go.”

Another key player will be forward Anna McDaniel, who finished with 12 points against WCCA, all from behind the arc. Along with her in the frontcourt will be Jordan Petty, who led all scorers with 13.

But even when the starting five are getting a rest, Hall is able to insert plenty of fresh legs.

“It is just a matter of getting our rotations with everybody together and going from there,” she said.

Ultimately, Hall believes this team has the potential to be a force again this year. They just have to put it together.

“I believe if we can stay healthy and injury free, and everybody brings their piece, it could be a lot of fun come playoff time,” she said.
