Deck the hall: Victorian luncheon helps maintain Magnolia Hall

NATCHEZ — While the passerby gets the treat of enjoying the beauty of Natchez’s historic homes, the finished product they see doesn’t come without a little sprucing up.

Enter the Natchez Garden Club, who is responsible for taking care of two historic homes in the area, Magnolia Hall and the House on Ellicott Hill.

Preserving the homes is no easy job, and more importantly, it is a job that is pricey.

So every year, the Garden Club calls on the community for support with the annual Victorian Luncheon, which will raise money for the preservation of Magnolia Hall.

“This is phase two of fundraising for Magnolia Hall,” Garden Club president Jo Ann Harrington said. “The house received a new roof four years ago, and phase two is the exterior of the house with maintenance and paint. A paint analyst gave us a report, so we know the colors that the house was when it was built.”

Although the earnings from the luncheon will go toward this phase of the project, Harrington also stressed the importance of maintenance on the homes at all times of the year.

“We try to keep our homes as preserved as they are,” she said. “There is always maintenance to be done to our two homes.”

The community has rallied behind the efforts of the Garden Club and history of the homes, and Harrington said she has been pleased with the amount of people who have showed up to the event in the past.

“The turnout has been great,” she said. “We invite the town and people from out of town. We have 300 to 400 people.”

All of the food at the event will be made by the ladies of the Garden Club, who Harrington said donated a large amount of time for the event.

On the back porch of the house, during the event, the Garden Club will also sell soup and casseroles. Harrington said if anyone would like to donate items, they would be more than happy to accept.

Tickets to the luncheon are $15, and can be bought at the door or at the office.

The office is open from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. every day with the exception of Monday, which is 9 a.m. until noon.

The annual Victorian Luncheon will be Dec. 4 at 11:30 a.m.
