Prep girls roundup: Ferriday, Vidalia fall in district

FERRIDAY —Ferriday head coach Lisa Abron knew her lack of depth would play a key role in certain games during the season. In a 52-47 loss to Winnfield Friday night, the lack of depth was the (16-3) Lady Trojans downfall.

Going into the fourth quarter with a 32-26 lead, Abron had to call off her full court press, since all five of her starters were in foul trouble.

“Trenace Morgan fouled out, Jada (Griggs) played with four fouls and Kesia (Mason) played with four fouls in that quarter,” Abron said. “We had to play them in man, and we didn’t rebound well either. We gave them too many second and third chances under the goal. We have to learn how to play smart.”

Griggs led Ferriday with 20 points, while Kesia Mason added 13.

Vidalia 31, Caldwell 77

COLUMBIA — The (4-9) Vidalia Lady Vikings could never get any offense going in a 77-31 loss to Caldwell Parish.

The Lady Vikings trailed 21-2 in the first quarter against the Lady Spartans, and could never find their groove.

“We just didn’t show up tonight,” Vidalia head coach Fred Marsalis said. “We didn’t play well at all, and they did. They were pressing, and we turned the ball over quite a lot.”

Tierra Bell scored more than half of the Lady Vikings points with 16 points. Taylor Wilson contributed nine in the loss, also.

Crystal Springs 34, Jefferson County 62

FAYETTE — Jefferson County took little time taking care of business at home, racing out to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter of a 62-34 win Friday night.

Diamond Smith led the (7-8) Lady Tigers with 20 points in the blowout win at home, while Rachel Shelvy and Kailyn Hammett provided 13 points apiece.

Amite School Center 25, ACCS 64

NATCHEZ — After losing to University Academy on Thursday, Adams County Christian School had to get back on the horse in a hurry for a district showdown against Amite School Center.

ACCS head coach Melanie Hall was pleased to see her team do just that in a 64-25 dominant win.

“These kids want to play,” Hall said. “They might get knocked down, but they’re going to get right back up and battle.”

Leading the way for the (19-4, 5-0) Lady Rebels were Bailey and McKenzie Boyd, who provided 15 and 14 points, respectively. Anna McDaniel also contributed 14 points in the big district win.

Despite the 40-15 lead at halftime, Hall said the game’s pace was played at a much slower pace than she anticipated.

“Of course, we had two games earlier this week that were fast-paced, physical and hard fought battles, and tonight, it looked like they were going in slow motion,” Hall said. “But we got a lot of kids in, and they all were happy for each other. To God be the glory.”

Franklin County 54, Wilkinson County 32

WOODVILLE — Franklin County raced out to a 10-2 lead in the first to set the pace for a 22-point win against Wilkinson County Friday evening.

Zayla Hunt and Jada Hunt scored 11 and 16, respectively, to give the Lady Bulldogs an edge against Wilkinson County.

Gadrieka Cotton led Wilkinson County with 14.

Trinity 66, WCCA 40

WOODVILLE — Jasmine Ivory and D’Asia Mitchell’s double-figure scoring performances aided (11-5, 3-0) Trinity to defeat WCCA 66-40.

Ivory scored 13, while Mitchell added 11 in the victory.

Carmen Cavin scored 24 points for WCCA in the loss.

Central Private 27,

Centreville 67

CENTREVILLE — Centreville built off its fast start and never looked back in a 67-27 victory against Central Private.

Katelyn Chandler scored 22 points for the Lady Tigers in the one-sided victory.
