Herron was born July 18, 1922 in Bogalusa, La., the daughter of Carrie “Case” Miller and Joel L. Miller.

She graduated from Hazlehurst High School as the salutatorian. She attended William Carey Women’s College in Hattiesburg and met the love of her life, W.C. “Short” Herron on a blind date. They were married Jan. 31, 1942, and had 52 wonderful years together.

After World War II, the couple moved to Natchez where their two children, Cara Lynn and William Joel were born. They became active members of the First Baptist Church in 1947. Marcelle served as the church’s first secretary. She taught all ages in Sunday school during her 62 years of service. She especially enjoyed teaching the women’s classes and they became “her girls.” A wonderful and creative teacher, she also taught church-wide mission studies, all the children’s mission groups and Vacation Bible School. She was very proud to chair the church’s historical committee and wrote the first history of the church. Missions were her heart, and she held many positions with the Women’s Missionary Union and also served as Association president.

Herron had another talent for directing weddings. She enjoyed doing this for 36 years and had the pleasure of directing parents and their children’s weddings.

Herron also worked as a secretary for 28 years in International Paper before she retired in 1983. After retirement, she was very involved in the church’s Count on Us club and enjoyed traveling with the group. She ended each trip entertaining the group with a poem she write about the trip. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, entertaining and taking care of others. She had amazing kindness, enthusiasm and a zest for life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Margaret Prine.

Herron is survived by her daughter, Cara, and son-in-law, John Cavin, of Madison, Wisc.; her son, Joel, and daughter-in-law, Debbie, of St. Augustine Fla.; one grandson, Jonathan Cavin of Tallahassee; one niece, Betty Breland and her husband, Terrell’ one nephew, Jimmy Harris; and a number of cousins.

The family would like to thank all the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice, her loving caregivers, Belinda Hollins, Doris Mikell, Shirley Anderson, Cornelia Kelly, Diana Schilling and special friends Joan Kiser and Barbara persons.

Memorial may be made to the First Baptist Church mission offerings or the American Diabetes Association.
