HAZELHURST — Jefferson County and Hazlehurst girls basketball teams traded blows for the better part of four quarters Tuesday night, but in the end the Lady Tigers pulled away with a 60-55 district win.

After going into the half 30-30 and trailing by one in the fourth quarter, the (10-8) Lady Tigers buckled down and outscored the Lady Indians 20-14 in the final quarter.

“We just stuck to our game plan,” Jefferson County coach Flora McKnight said. “We played great defense and played selfless basketball.”

Diamond Smith, who missed most of last season after tearing her ACL and MCL, provided the Lady Tigers with 16 points, 14 rebounds and five steals.

“This is the best comeback story about a female that I’ve seen in a long time,” McKnight said.

Jefferson County’s Antrell Gales scored 17 and secured eight rebounds, while Kailyn Hammett produced 16 points and nine assists.

With the win, Jefferson County remains undefeated in district (3-0).

Ferriday 60, Oak Grove 55

OAK GROVE — After losing its first district game of the year last Friday, the (17-3) Ferriday Lady Trojans bounced back with a 60-55 win against Oak Grove to improve to 3-1 in district play.

“It was a pretty close game,” Ferriday head coach Lisa Abron said. “It’s always tough to come to Oak Grove.”

But like in Friday’s loss against Winnfield, Abron had to pull her team out of the press in the game, due to her team’s early foul troubles. Abron made a gutsy call in the fourth quarter, putting her team back in the press despite her team’s foul troubles.

“We went back to our pressure and forced some turnovers to get some easy baskets toward the end,” Abron said.

Jada Griggs led the Lady Trojans with 23, while Kesia Mason provided 14 and Trenace Morgan added 10.

ACCS 50, Brookhaven

Academy 40

NATCHEZ — With a 50-40 win against Brookhaven Academy, the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels grabbed its 20th win of the season.

The (20-4) Lady Rebels hit the accelerator early, cruising toward a 35-18 halftime lead.

Bailey Boyd led ACCS with 12, while Anna McDaniel aided the Lady Rebels with nine.

Cathedral 34,

Bogue Chitto 75

BOGUE CHITTO — Cathedral could not handle the press in a 75-34 loss on the road to Bogue Chitto Tuesday night.

After trailing 14-7 going into the second quarter, the Lady Green Wave were outscored 24-11 in the second quarter, leading to a 38-18 halftime deficit.

“Our main problem was turning the ball over tonight,” Cathedral head coach Randy Smith said. “We didn’t execute breaking the press, and we just turned the ball over repeatedly because of it.”

Elizabeth Smith led (6-5) Cathedral in the loss with 14, while Marty Lewis scored nine.

“Give (Bogue Chitto) all the credit,” Smith said. “They ran a good show, shot really well. They just played really well.”

St. Joseph 32, Monterey 45

MONTEREY — The Lady Wolves took care of business at home, after jumping up on St. Joseph 13-5 in the first quarter.

St. Joseph kept it moderately close for four quarters, but Monterey pushed its lead into double digits in the third quarter to cruise to its 12th win.

“We persevered,” Monterey head coach Cary Shivley said. “We played basketball and made shots when we needed to.”

Sydney Woodruff led the team with 11 points and Tiffany Weeks scored nine for the Lady Wolves in the win.

Trinity 70, Franklin

Academy 39

COLUMBIA — The Lady Saints showed off their offensive star power in a 70-39 win against Franklin Academy.

D’Asia Mitchell, Deonna Jackson and Tali Bard all scored double figures for Trinity.

With the win, the Lady Saints remain unbeaten in district play (3-0), and improve to 12-5 on the season.
