Natchez City Clerk Donnie Holloway confirmed Tuesday he has qualified to run for Adams County chancery court clerk.

Holloway said he made the decision to run for that office after much thought.

“I’ve been city clerk for 14-and-a-half years, doing a lot of the same duties as the chancery clerk, like maintaining records,” Holloway said. “I feel like I’m qualified to do it.”

This is not the first time Holloway has run for a county office. Holloway ran unsuccessfully for the positions of tax assessor and circuit clerk.

In August, the Natchez Board of Aldermen moved to change Holloway’s current position from an elected to an appointed position. The charter change was approved by the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office and Gov. Phil Bryant’s office in November. Before the change, Holloway said he had already decided not to run for city clerk in 2016.

Others who have filed to run for chancery clerk are Brandi Lewis and Joe Murray.

Lewis is a Natchez attorney and Murray is Adams County administrator. The deadline to qualify to run for county elections is 5 p.m. Feb. 27.

The primary is set for Aug. 4, with any necessary runoffs scheduled for Aug. 25 and the general election Nov. 3.
