Garden club is springing into history

Hopefully, everyone is starting to thaw out a little bit and is looking forward to a fun-filled Spring in Natchez. As always, the members of the Natchez Garden Club have a lot to do to help you fill your social calendars throughout the month of March.

With Spring Pilgrimage and Tableaux beginning at the end of the week, be sure to make every effort to become a tourist in your own hometown.

Each of our homes will be ready to welcome you in for a little history lesson from back in the day. Also, the many changes to the Tableaux will be something that everyone should get out and see one weekend.

For the Natchez Garden Club, we will be having our March meeting on Thursday, March 5 at Magnolia Hall on the corners of Pearl and Washington streets. With the business meeting at 11 a.m., a program will follow at 11:30 a.m. This month, Jim Coy will join us to educate us on the Britton years of Magnolia Hall.

What happened to our beautiful mansion in the years that followed the death of Thomas Henderson, the original owner? Jim Coy will explore the events between then and the time it became a rooming house known as Magnolia Inn. These were the Britton years. Coy, who is married to a Britton descendant, Ruthie Conner Coy, is noted both for his historical research and his fascinating presentations on Natchez history.

Afterwards, a lunch will be provided for a cost of $12. Please be sure to make your reservations for the lunch by Tuesday of this week by calling the garden club office at 601-443-9065. Also, we will still be collecting items for local charities. For the Guardian Shelter, bring personal hygiene items; and for the Stewpot, bring pre-packaged cookies.

Also at this meeting, we will be drawing for the winners of the raffle led by Brenda Edgin and Sharon Sharp. Be sure to go ahead and buy your tickets by either contacting the garden club office or by coming to the meeting for one last chance at a ticket. These five prizes are each a real treat that you don’t want to miss.

Finally, on Sunday, March 29, NGC will be hosting an Easter Egg Hunt on the beautiful grounds of Monmouth Historic Inn from 2 to 4 p.m.

Be sure to dress your kids in their Easter attire, grab a basket and join us for a fun-filled afternoon. The price will be $10 a child. However, for all siblings after the first two, each will be half-priced to hunt eggs. Who knows, the Easter bunny may drop by.

For more information about all of NGC’s events for the rest of the spring months, visit our website, natchezgardenclub.org, like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Pushlocal or call the office at 601-443-9065 with any questions you may have. We will see you Thursday.
