VIDALIA — Through five innings, Vidalia pitcher Taylor Rodgers did her part on the mound. The problem was the offense wasn’t giving her any run support to show for it and appeared in danger of losing another key LHSAA District 3-3A game.

But then the Lady Vikings’ bats finally came alive in the last two innings and they got some help from a couple of untimely Caldwell Parish errors, which eventually led to Rodgers’ walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning as Vidalia escaped with a 3-2 win over the Lady Spartans.

“It was a very exciting ball game. I knew all along the girls had it in them. Sometimes they question themselves and their ability. Tonight they realized it by coming back,” Vidalia head coach Forrest Foster said.

Caldwell Parish scored one run each in the top of the second, third and fifth innings to grab a 3-0 lead. And the way Conner Stockstill was pitching during those first five innings, it looked like that lead was going to hold up.

Then the wheels started to unravel for the Lady Spartans in the bottom of the sixth. An error by their shortstop paved the way for the Lady Vikings to bring in two runs to make at 3-2 game. And Foster said his team gave away a golden opportunity for even more runs.

“We should have tied the game in that inning. We had runners on second and third and no outs. But we weren’t able to put the bunt down and the third out was a line drive that the shortstop made a great play on,” Foster said.

In the bottom of the seventh, an error allowed Kaitlan McCarver to reach first base. She was subbed by speedy pinch runner Kelsi Cavazos. She immediately stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before Cassie Gonzales singled her in with the game-tying run.

Still with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Gonzales stole second with Rodgers at the plate. Then with two strikes, Rodgers ripped a single down the middle to bring in Gonzales with the game-winning run.

Rodgers gave up three runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts with just one walk over seven innings to pick up the win. She also went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.

“Everything was working real well for her. She got frustrated in one inning. After that, she threw a better ball game,” Foster said.

Stockstill went six and one-third innings and allowed four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks to go with a double. Kate Carraway went 3-for-4 with a home run.

Vidalia (6-3, 4-2) next plays on Saturday at the Vidalia Softball Tournament. The Lady Vikings will take on Monterey at 9 a.m., then against LaSalle at 1 p.m., and finally they will match up with Franklin Parish at 7 p.m.

Monterey 8, Grace Christian 2

MONTEREY — With the outcome still in doubt, Monterey’s Jody Duncan came through in the clutch with a grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Lady Wolves to an 8-2 win over the Grace Christian Lady Warriors Thursday afternoon in an LHSAA District 6-B game.

Monterey went into the bottom of the sixth leading Grace Christian by just one run, 3-2. Then the Lady Wolves exploded for five total runs to give not only the team but starting pitcher Bailey Book some much-needed breathing room.

Book went the distance and gave up two runs on two hits, struck out 10 batters and walked three. Those two runs came in the top of the second inning that tied the game at 2-2 before the Lady Wolves regained the lead with one run in the bottom of the third. Duncan ended up going 2-for-4 and Tiffany Weeks had a double.

Monterey (6-5, 2-0) next plays three games on Saturday at the Vidalia Softball Tournament. The Lady Wolves will take on host Vidalia at 9 a.m., Franklin Parish at 3 p.m., and LaSalle at 5 p.m.

Cathedral at Bogue Chitto postponed

BOGUE CHITTO — Strong thunderstorms and heavy rain in most of Lincoln County forced the postponement of Cathedral’s MHSAA Division 7-1A games Thursday afternoon at Bogue Chitto.

Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said the two teams are working on having the games rescheduled for Monday, April 13 with the junior varsity game starting at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6 p.m. The Lady Green Wave plays host to Enterprise today. The JV game begins at 5 p.m. and the varsity game will follow at 6 p.m.

Franklin County at Tylertown rained out

TYLERTOWN — The inclement weather moved its way into Walthall County and forced Thursday afternoon’s MHSAA Division 7-3A opener between the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs and the Tylertown Lady Chiefs to be postponed.

Franklin County head coach Sally Case said the junior varsity and varsity games will now take place today with the JV game at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 5 p.m. This also means that Franklin County’s non-division game at West Lincoln has been canceled.

Delta Charter takes two

FERRIDAY — The Delta Charter School Lady Storm continued their early season success Thursday, picking up their fifth and sixth wins of the season against D’Arbonne Woods.

Delta Charter took the first game 7-1 and followed it up in the second game with a 21-4 win.

Jania Burns got the win for Delta Charter in the first game and Darby Beach recorded two hits.

In the second game, Delta Charter racked up 13 runs in the first inning and continued to roll into the second inning scoring eight more in the frame.

Hayley Sharp was the winning pitcher for the Lady Storm and Shelbi McManus, Laiken Hood, Macee Thornton and Sharp all recorded multiple hits.

The Lady Storm (6-2) will resume play Monday at home against Beekman Charter School.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
