PELAHATCHIE — Quinton Logan hit two home runs in as many innings and Sam Parker struck out nine batters as the Cathedral Green Wave hammered the Pelahatchie Chiefs 15-0 in five innings Friday afternoon in an MHSAA Division 7-1A game.

Logan’s first at-bat of the game was not even an official one – a sacrifice fly that resulted in his first run batted in. That was in the top of the first inning as Cathedral grabbed a 2-0 lead.

His second at-bat was indeed official – a two-run home run as part of an 8-run scoring output in the top of the second inning that gave the Green Wave a commanding 10-0 lead.

As for Parker, he was just as dominant on the mound. In addition to his near double-digit strikeout performance, he gave up just two hits and walked only two batters over five innings. Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said Parker’s command and location are getting better as the season goes on.

“He had a good game. He looks good on the mound. He’s starting to get all his pitches over the plate for strikes,” Beesley said.

As a team, the Green Wave were very patient at the plate and they made the Chiefs pay when they walked a batter. Losing pitcher Tyler Flores and Noah Smith combined to walk 10 Cathedral batters. Flores walked six over two innings and Smith walked four in his two innings of work.

Flores gave up 10 runs on seven hits with zero strikeouts in the first two innings. Smith allowed five runs on two hits with no strikeouts.

“We’re starting to be a little more patient at the plate. We’re swinging at good pitches and taking advantage of that,” Beesley said.

Logan then finished off his outstanding showing at the plate with a three-run home run in the top of the third inning. He finished 2-for-2 with six RBIs. But he wasn’t the only one who came through for the Green Wave.

Andrew Beesley had three stolen bases and two RBIs, Cooper Murray drove in two runs, and Pate Shirley had two stolen bases.

Cathedral (7-1, 2-0) plays host to Loyd Star today at 11 a.m. Its game against Porter’s Chapel that was scheduled for 1 p.m. today has been cancelled.
