NATCHEZ — Gabe Smith pitched seven solid innings and Zach Flattmann had a key run-scoring triple in the bottom of the third inning as the Cathedral Green Wave rallied to defeat the Loyd Star Hornets 6-4 Saturday morning at Chester Willis Field.

Smith allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and five walks. The defense behind him made some big plays when the Green Wave needed them and committed just one error.

“I thought he pitched well. He did have a few leadoff walks. But I thought he pitched well for us today,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said about Smith’s outing. “We played real well (defensively). Loyd Star had a couple of opportunities to have some big innings, but our defense came through and we were able to get out of those innings.”

Loyd Star grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Cathedral tied the game in the bottom of the second. The Hornets regained the lead with one run in the top of the third, but the Green Wave scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning and a 5-2 lead.

Flattmann’s triple brought in the game-tying run and Cathedral followed with three more runs in the frame. Smith ended up going 2-for-2 with one run batted in and had a pivotal plate appearance with the Green Wave leading by just one run, 5-4, after Loyd Star plated two runs in the top of the fourth.

“He had two big hits early in the game, but his biggest at-bat was in the bottom of the sixth,” Beesley said. “He had a sacrifice bunt, which put a runner in scoring position. Reed White then scored on a J.J. Jenkins single. That gave us a two-run lead going into the sixth.”

Konner Smith suffered the loss after giving up six runs (only two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and just one walk in six innings.

Cathedral (8-1) plays host to Monterey at 7 p.m. Monday.

River Oaks 12, ACCS 10

NATCHEZ — Wade Simpson hit a double and a triple for Adams County Christian School, but it was not quite enough as the Rebels lost another close game at home, this time to the River Oaks School Mustangs 12-10 Saturday afternoon.

Marshall Edmonds had two hits at the plate, including a double. Unfortunately, he was saddled with the loss on the mound for ACCS. The Rebels had five extra-base hits in the game, including a home run by Bradley Jones and a double from Cole Gatlin. Both Simpson and Gatlin had two hits apiece.

ACCS (2-6) will look to get back in the winning column at 6:30 p.m. Monday when the Rebels finish a three-game homestand against Wilkinson County Christian Academy.

Vidalia 12, Block 2

VIDALIA — The Vidalia Vikings rolled to a 12-2 win over the Block Bears in five innings Saturday afternoon to snap a two-game losing streak. No other information on the game was available.

Vidalia goes undefeated, Monterey goes 1-2 at Vidalia Tournament

VIDALIA — The Vidalia Lady Vikings went 3-0 at the Vidalia High Softball Tournament, but they needed some outstanding pitching from Taylor Rodgers and key hits in their final two games to get there.

Vidalia blew open a close game against Monterey with 16 runs over the last two innings to claim a 16-5 win over the Lady Wolves. Megan Naquin went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Rodgers was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Rodgers allowed just one hit and struck out six in four innings. Tiffany Weeks was charged with the loss as she gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks over four innings.

The Lady Vikings then went on to beat the LaSalle Lady Tigers 2-0. Naquin scored on a wild pitch and Katlyn McCarver reached on an error that scored courtesy runner Tatum Turner in the top of the fourth inning. Rodgers went the distance, allowed six hits and struck out four.

In the nightcap, Vidalia held on for a 1-0 win over the Franklin Parish Lady Patriots. Rodgers won a pitchers’ duel against Franklin Parish’s Kylie McMurray. Rodgers gave up four hits, struck out 10 and walked one. McMurray allowed one run on three hits, struck out nine and walked one. Taylor Yates singled and later scored on a single by Cassie Gonzales in the top of the third inning.

Vidalia (9-3) next plays at 4 p.m. Monday at Marksville.

Monterey defeated Franklin Parish 4-0 in its second game of the day and then lost a high-scoring game to LaSalle 11-8. The Lady Wolves (7-7) plays at 5 p.m. Monday at Georgetown.
