VIDALIA — After a 9-1 loss to Jena earlier this season, Vidalia head coach Forrest Foster promised his team would put forth a better effort next time the Lady Vikings come across the Lady Giants.

In a 10-7 win against Jena at home, Foster’s words rang true.

“I knew all along that we could play with Jena,” Foster said. “They’re a great team, but so are we.”

Vidalia faced adversity in the first couple of innings, though. Down 3-0 in the second inning, Vidalia used patient at-bats to draw walks that ultimately tied the game.

“Every girl on this team had a great at-bat tonight,” Foster said. “I was really impressed with the way we were able to be patient at the plate, and we drew consecutive walks in that inning to get back into it.”

After a scoreless top half of the fourth inning, Vidalia took control with five runs. After Taylor Yates and Shelby Vinet drew walks, Cassie Gonazales, Taylor Rodgers and Katelynn Bertleson singled before Megan Naquin delivered a 3-RBI double, giving Vidalia an 8-3 lead.

Vidalia added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth before Jena could only summon two runs in the seventh.

Vidalia’s Taylor Rodgers earned the win and went 3-for-3 at the plate with two singles and a double. Katelyn Bertleson went 2-for-4 for the Lady Vikings, including a double.

With the win, Vidalia improves to 11-3 on the season, defeating a Jena team that ranked two spots higher at No. 14 in the unofficial Louisiana High School Athletics Association power ratings.

Monterey 14, Harrisonburg 0

HARRISONBURG — It took Monterey just five innings to dispose of Harrisonburg and improve to 3-1 in district play.

Bailey Book got the win on the mound for the Lady Wolves, allowing only one hit in the shutout victory.

“She did extremely well tonight,” Monterey head coach Carey Shivley said.

Jody Duncan led Monterey with two doubles, going 3-for-4 on the day. Tiffany Weeks and Tylee Moore added doubles for the Lady Wolves, and Molly Gray went 3-for-4 to help Monterey improve to 8-10 on the season.
