VIDALIA — In Concordia Bank’s 6-1 win against Natchez Market Thursday night, Concordia Bank showcased its productive blend of local talent.

With players from Vidalia, Delta Charter and Natchez on the roster, the unit came together as a well-oiled machine, despite a rocky first inning. Concordia Bank pitcher Cole McGivaren walked three of the first five batters he faced, allowing a run on a past ball. However, McGivaren collected himself and struck the final batter out with two runners on to get out of the inning.

“The first inning I did bad because I walked some, but the second and third, I think I did pretty good,” McGivaren said.

Down 1-0, Concordia Bank’s Trey Johnson hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Tristan Weatherly, who started the game in centerfield before moving to his natural catcher position in the second inning, followed with a single before Rome Tolliver hit an RBI single to score Johnson. Weatherly scored on a past ball to give Concordia Bank a 3-1 lead.

In the second inning, McGivaren made quick work of Natchez Market, striking out back-to-back batters to end the inning. Weatherly was back behind home plate with Tolliver in centerfield.

“Rome was late because he was coming from football summer workouts,” Concordia Bank coach Jared Wiggins said. “We feel good about our defense when we have Tristan behind home plate.”

Drew Mulvihill singled in the second before Taylor Kimball hit an RBI grounder to pitcher Wally Harrison. After McGiveran kept his no-hitter going in the third, Concordia Bank added two more runs in the third to go up 5-1, despite only collecting three hits in four innings batted.

“Cole did a great job,” Wiggins said. “The bats aren’t where we want it right now, but we’re proud of Rome coming in to finish the game out, and that’s a great job behind the plate by Tristan. Solid performances by Jacob (Spinks) and Trey (Johnson) in middle infield, as well.”

Natchez Market threatened in the fourth inning after a walk drawn by Jacob Reese.

With Tolliver pitching in place of McGiveran, and a runner on third base with two outs, Concordia Bank elected to try and catch Natchez Market stealing home, so Tolliver purposefully threw it a bit outside. As the ball went behind home plate, Weatherly quickly grabbed the ball and threw to Tolliver to make the final out of the inning.

“It was almost a designed play,” Wiggins said. “We called that. We did it on a whim, and it worked. We just felt comfortable with Tristan behind home plate.”

Harrison recorded the only hit of the game for Natchez Market, scoring an infield single in the fifth inning. Tolliver struck out the final two batters to end the inning and the game.
