NATCHEZ — Following the first round of the third annual Tom Matthews Memorial 2-Man Scramble, five teams shared the first-round lead at 10-under-par 62, and the other four teams in that flight were just two shots back at 8-under-par 64.

One of the co-leading teams, Tom Bryant of Natchez and Rickey Bagbey of Lake Providence, La., broke away with a final-round score of 12-under-par 60 for a two-day total of 122 to capture first place honors in that flight.

“I’m 57 years old and still having fun,” Bryant said.

Both Bryant and Bagbey grew up in Lake Providence. While Bagbey still lives in Lake Providence, Bryant has been living in Natchez since 2004 and twice was golf pro at Beau Pré.

“It was fun. We played well, and we play together in a lot of things for the past 40 years,” Bagbey said.

“He’s one of my best friends,” Bryant said. “Golf is the only sport.”

“Well, football is next,” Bagbey interrupted.

Three of the teams that went into Sunday with a share of the first-round lead in the first flight ended up in a tie for second place after each team had rounds of 9-under-par 63 to finish at 125 – Casey Ham and Jeff Anderson; Wesley Rogers and Stephen Hollingsworth; and Lee Jones and Cole Bradford.

Two teams ended up in a tie for first place in the second flight after having rounds of 63 to finish with a two-day total of 129 – Jordan and Henry Farmer as well as Tee Cotten and Joel Dupré. The team of Woody Allen and Kevin Smith Sr., which began the day leading that flight after an opening-round 65, shot another round of 65 but ended up in third place at 130.

The tournament raises money that benefits a scholarship fund for local youth golfers by way of the tournament’s sponsor, the Wharlest Jackson Elks Lodge. Last year, the tournament raised $3,500 and could surpass that amount this year.

This year’s two-day tournament had a full field of 36 teams (72 players). And the other three flights were just a competitive – even the fourth flight, which on Saturday ended up with eight teams having scores of 1-over-par 73 or higher.
