S’mores are a simple treat with a surprising amount of potential spinoffs to please the child in everyone.

For Boy Scout Troop 168 Scout leader Ricky Warren, roasting marshmallows for the messy treat is an anticipated tradition among his boys.

Warren takes his campers out approximately once a month, and part of the experience is roasting a marshmallow and enjoying the ooey-gooeyness with some chocolate between two pieces of graham cracker.

He said his group has tried everything from giant marshmallows to square ones, in search of the perfect combination of sticky sugar, dripping chocolate and crispy crunch.

The one thing that hasn’t changed yet is how he and the boys cook the summertime treat.

“We cook ours over an open fire because it gives them a little bit of that outdoor flavor,” Warren said. “I want my marshmallows burnt. That’s the way I like them.”

Whether you want your marshmallow black or golden brown, there are a variety of ways to try them.

Warren and his Boy Scouts stick to the traditional chocolate bar, graham cracker and marshmallow, but try some of the following recipes to fully enjoy the diversity of the simple s’more:

The classic

2 graham crackers

1/2 Hershey Milk Chocolate bar

Place the chocolate on one graham cracker square.

Roast your marshmallow to perfection — your definition of the perfect marshmallow, of course.

Place the marshmallow on top of the chocolate.

Smush the sandwich together with the remaining graham cracker.
