Democrat taps Murray, Walker

Adams County voters will select two people from the seven seeking the offices of chancery clerk and circuit clerk in Tuesday’s Democratic primary election.

After studying the issues, interviewing the candidates and listening to their public appearances, two of the seven stand out from the crowd and earn our endorsement.

For Adams County Chancery Court Clerk, county administrator Joe Murray is the most logical choice for the position. Opponents have suggested Murray’s lack of legal degree is a hindrance to him, but the truth is a great majority of Mississippi’s chancery clerks are not attorneys and they do just fine.

Murray has proven himself to be an excellent problem solver in his county administrator role.

His drive to figure out complicated issues or matters that simply do not make logical sense will serve him well in the chancery clerk’s office.

Murray’s efforts have saved county taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars by identifying ways to save taxpayer money and working with departments to make the necessary changes to realize those savings. His diligence recently uncovered a glitch that previous county administrators, county tax collectors and years of auditors missed. His catching the error will put more than $400,000 each year back in the county coffers instead of the school district’s accounts where they had been erroneously directed.

At the other end of the courthouse in the circuit court clerk’s office, we can find no good reason to remove incumbent Eddie Walker from his position. His office has had clean audits and he appears to be serving taxpayers well.

Returning Walker back to the office will allow the clerk’s office to continue operating smoothly and efficiently.

We encourage voters to give both of these candidates strong consideration, as we believe they’re the best options among a good crop of candidates.

Most important, however, we urge registered voters to go to the polls and cast their votes on Tuesday.
