County under burn ban until Aug. 31

NATCHEZ —Adams County enacted Monday a countywide burn ban that will be in effect through Aug. 31.

The ban was enacted by the Adams County Board of Supervisors at the request of County Fire Coordinator Darryl Smith.

Smith said the county is under a “limited fire danger threat.”

The National Weather Service says conditions will be dry and hot over the next few days, and Smith said while some rain is expected in coming days it may not be enough to make conditions safe for burning.

4The board heard a request from Walter Biglane to declare two pieces of land near the port area surplus.

Biglane said he wants to plant tomatoes and fruit trees on the property.

Board Attorney Scott Slover said one of the pieces of property actually belongs to the St. Catherine Creek Utility Authority, and was previously a sludge-dumping site for the former Mississippi River Corp.

The second tract of land, a number of acres behind the county work barn and near von Drehle, is owned by the county but Natchez Inc. has advised against declaring it surplus or selling it for any reason other than economic development, Slover said.

• The board approved several cellular antennae permits that the county’s tower consultant, Spencer Stutzman, said would help enhance cellular service in eastern and southern Adams County.

• The board voted to allow Adams County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Charles Harrigill, the county’s environmental officer, to pursue a grant that would allow local CVS stores to serve as the disposal site for unused and expired medicines.
