NATCHEZ — While incumbent Adams County Circuit Clerk Eddie Walker has only 382 votes to thank for his victory — county chancery clerk candidates Brandi Lewis and Joe Murray are hitting the campaign trail once again.

In Tuesday’s primary election, Walker ousted opponents Lamar Bullen and Jennifer “Lady J” Johnson with 52.5 percent, or 4,419 votes.

Johnson captured 3,645 votes while Bullen brought in a slim 353 votes.

An hour before the polls closed, Walker wasn’t so sure of his chances.

“When you run for office, you either run unopposed or scared to death,” Walker said. “I’m the latter.”

However, now that Walker has secured another term as Adams County circuit clerk, he said his plan is to “take everything day by day.”

“I expect very little to change,” Walker said Tuesday night while celebrating with friends and family at Natchez Coffee Co.

Despite his loss, Bullen said he was glad he threw his hat in the ring.

“I’m glad I made myself available for voters,” he said.

Johnson was unavailable for comment Tuesday night.

In the county chancery clerk’s race, Lewis gained 2,404 votes while Murray received 2,632 — resulting in a runoff election.

Murray said he was pleased with the result.

“I got three more weeks ahead of me now,” Murray said while celebrating at Biscuits and Blues restaurant. “I’m going to continue putting in the same amount of effort I have since January.”

After hearing the results, Lewis said her initial feeling was one of humbleness.

“I’m very thankful, and I’m appreciative of the three men I got to run against,” Lewis said, referring to Murray, Donnie Holloway and Jack Lazarus.

Holloway brought in 1,456 votes, while Lazarus garnered 1,860.

Looking ahead to the Aug. 25 runoff election, Lewis said she hopes she can gain more support, more votes.

“We’re just going to keep on the same track we were on,” said Lewis, who currently serves as a staff attorney for Adams County Chancery Court. “I thank everyone for their support, and their vote. We hit the ground running, and I’ve really enjoyed visiting with everyone in Adams County.”
