NATCHEZ — The Mississippi Association of Independent Schools released its football schedule Friday, giving Cathedral a full slate of games and nixing a state championship rematch between Centreville Academy and Adams County Christian School.

To make room for an Oct. 9 showdown with Cathedral at home, ACCS dropped its previously scheduled Centreville contest.

“I have a great relationship with Coach (Bill) Hurst,” ACCS head coach David King said. “I enjoy the competition against him, and that’s always a huge gate for us. But Cathedral will be a big gate too. This will be the first time in 15 years that I won’t play against Hurst, though. Maybe I’ll get lucky and get into the playoffs and play against him there, because I know Centreville will be there.”

Meanwhile, Cathedral picked up three MAIS Class AAAA opponents in Jackson Prep, Parklane Academy and University Academy.

“I’m really excited,” Cathedral head coach Ron Rushing said. “That’s competition from the first week until the last week. That’s a pretty tough schedule, but it’ll be great competition.”

Among the opponents scheduled against the Green Wave this year are some familiar faces Rushing once competed against, either as a player or a coach. Cathedral will play Centreville, matching Rushing against Hurst and Parklane, who will be coached by former Centreville assitant Brian Stutzman this season.

The hardest adjustment will be gathering information on all the new opponents, Rushing said.

“I have six years of folders on the teams we played (in Mississippi High School Activities Association), and now, I don’t have anything on anybody,” Rushing said. “It’s going to be a lot of work for us learning new information on opponents, and that’s going to be the most difficult challenge.”

As for the impending matchup against ACCS on Oct. 9, Rushing said it’s far from his mind.

“Hopefully it will have high implications, but that’s far too down the road to be thinking about right now,” Rushing said.

The MAIS schedule changes did not replace any Trinity Episcopal Day School games, but did alter some dates.
