NATCHEZ — After suffering a one-run loss last week to district and cross-town foe Cathedral, the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels approached Tuesday’s rematch with a different mindset and determination.

“I thought we were really focused coming into this game,” ACCS head coach Rick Fife said. “I think we had a good showing tonight and picked up a big district win.”

ACCS benefitted from three runs in two different innings and another run late in the game to down Cathedral 7-3.

“Those first two innings we played really well and were clicking, but then we just kind of fell apart,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said.

The Lady Wave were in business early, getting two runners on in the first inning. But it was slim pickings from there as ACCS pitcher Brianna Henson kept Cathedral in check at the plate.

“She pitched a really good game tonight,” said Fife of Henson. “She gave up those two hits early and got a little frustrated, but she worked through it and did a good job hitting spots. We were able to keep them off balance.”

Cathedral would go hitless in the next three innings, while ACCS bats came to life in the bottom of the third.

After a Shelby Mason single, Ashleigh Williams crushed a ball over the center field wall to give ACCS a 2-0 lead.

“I was just really excited to come out here and play against Cathedral again after taking that one run loss last week,” Williams said. “To get that hit and get us up two early in the game, it really boosted our confidence.”

The Lady Rebels plated another run after a misplayed ball in right field hit by Lexi Emmanuel pushed another run across. Unfortunately for Cathedral, right fielder Haleigh Nunnery was injured on the play, allowing Emmanuel to get all the way to third base.

The ACCS lead grew larger in the fifth as the Lady Rebels added another three runs on three hits.

A Jordan Petty sacrifice fly increased the lead to 4-0 and RBI singles from Emmanuel and Savanna Spear brought it to 6-0.

Petty drove in another run in the sixth on a double to give ACCS a 7-0 lead heading into the final inning of play.

Although things hadn’t gone their way most of the night, Cathedral didn’t lay down.

The Lady Wave racked up five hits in the seventh and pushed across three runs, but eventually left the bases loaded and took the loss.

“For us to come back and still have life even in the seventh shows what kind of team we are,” Blackwell said. “We still have a lot of fight in us. We don’t give up, and I was really happy to see that.”

For Fife and the Lady Rebels, one more district game remains, and the head coach said he feels good heading into it.

“I feel the girls got more confidence tonight and that is big for us,” Fife said. “One-run games have killed us this year, we’ve lost six or seven, but I think we learned tonight how to finish a game. They gave us a heart attack, but we finally finished a game, and that is very important.”
