VIDALIA — If you were expecting Vidalia High School seniors to be overjoyed with its 27-26 win against Sicily Island in Week 1, you better think again.

Thursday afternoon, Vidalia seniors let it be known going 1-0 is far from the end goal, despite going 0-10 last season.

“It was important, but it was just the first step,” senior Ash Willis said.

Instead of having that overjoyed feeling of getting back to the winning side of the things, the seniors were actually critical of the one-point margin victory. Vidalia senior wide receiver Curtis McNulty said the Vikings left a lot on the table.

“I felt like we could have put up a lot more points,” McNulty said. “We should’ve done a whole lot more.”

What happened in Week 1 is far from Vidalia’s mind as it enters a matchup against Delhi tonight. Vikings head coach Jeff Hancock hopes his team is keen on the contest, and not looking one week ahead, though.

“I know people are thinking about Ferriday because that’s our natural rival,” Hancock said. “But we’ve got Delhi first. I tell the players, all you have to think about now is Delhi.”

Delhi comes into the game 0-1 after falling to Arcadia 37-8 last week. Hancock said Delhi likes to bring a lot of pressure and has a quarterback that is capable of changing the game with both his arm and legs.

Willis said it’s important for Vidalia to not only get the win, but put together an even more impressive showing than the Vikings did a week ago.

“We have nine more games to play, and we have to play each and every one better than we did the last,” he said.
