Lady Rebels shutout against Simpson

MENDENHALL — For the second time in two days, MAIS District 4-AAA champion Simpson Academy pitching held a district opponent to just three hits. And both games were against local teams.

On Monday afternoon, it was on the road against Cathedral. Then on Tuesday afternoon, it was at home as the sixth-ranked Lady Cougars defeated the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels 6-0 in the district finale for both teams.

The good news for ACCS was that it did play better defensively against Simpson Academy (18-8, 7-1) than it did in a 9-0 home loss to second-ranked Silliman Institute. The bad news was that the Lady Rebels were shut out in back-to-back games.

“I think we played a pretty clean defensive game. They just out-hit us. They were hitting the gaps,” ACCS head coach Rick Fife said.

The Lady Rebels did not commit a single error, but losing pitcher Ashleigh Williams gave up 11 hits and two walks. She also struck out four batters. The Lady Cougars struck for two runs each in the bottom of the first and second innings.

Williams pitched two straight scoreless innings before Simpson Academy scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

“I think she pitched alright. She didn’t pitch great. She pitched a decent game,” Fife said about Williams. “I think we improved on our defensive games. We made a couple of plays in the outfield.”

Meanwhile, Simpson Academy pitcher kept ACCS’s hitters off balance throughout the game.

“She was able to spot her fastball well to get ground balls. She was able to use her off-speed pitches,” Fife said.

ACCS (12-14, 3-5) doesn’t play again until next Monday when it hosts Class AAAA Parklane Academy at approximately 7:15 p.m.
