ACCS looks to stay unbeaten

NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School is heading into district play with an undefeated record, but the Rebels, like Trinity Episcopal Day School and Cathedral High School, are in the midst of homecoming week.

ACCS head coach David King has been around long enough to have concerns about the distractions created by the extra activities, but he’s determined to see his ACCS club come out focused against a winless Brookhaven Academy team.

“We had a little lapse of focus last week, and you’d really like to come back and see those guys correct those mental mistakes,” King said. “Now, Brookhaven, they’re down. They’re not the Brookhaven of old, and our kids see that on film. But the bottom line is this is a district ballgame, and no matter how down they may be, we have to play. They’re already 0-1 in district, so this is their playoff game. We’ve got to avoid the distractions.”

Brookhaven Academy is 0-1 in district play after falling to Cathedral 41-6 last Friday.

ACCS has raced to a 4-0 record with brilliant play from quarterback Carlos Woods, who scrambled on a broken play and found a streaking George Scott for a long touchdown in last Friday’s win against Wilkinson County Christian Academy. King said Woods’ maturity and physical growth has paid dividends in ballgames this season.

“Carlos is seeing the field so much better, and he throws the ball on the run real well,” King said. “That play was him. That was a breakdown play, and Coach (Matthew) Freeman workswith the receivers every day. He threw it on the money. We call it a breakdown route. Carlos, when he’s flushed out, he’s still looking down the field. Last year, he was kind of in a frazzle.”

Also playing big on both sides of the ball — whether it be an acrobatic reception or game-changing interception on defense — has been Shaverick Williams. King said he expects Williams to continue to develop into one of ACCS’ best playmakers.

“Shaverick has a big body, and I think he’s one of these kids that has really worked hard at playing offense,” King said. “I’ve been real pleased with him coming on.”

King and the Rebels welcome Brookhaven Academy into Bobby Marks Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday.
