Cathedral overcomes slow start

NATCHEZ — A sluggish start did not prevent Cathedral High School (6-1) from beating University Academy 43-12 Friday night.

The night started off with a bang for the Cathedral Green Wave, as a high University snap sailed over quarterback Peyton Gauthier’s head and into the back of the end zone for a safety. Cathedral wide receiver Jardarius Anderson returned the ensuing kick for a touchdown to give Cathedral a 9-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Green Wave entered the second quarter leading 9-6 to head coach Ron Rushing’s dismay.

“It felt like a scrimmage in the first quarter,” Rushing said. “I think that’s because it’s the game between Simpson and ACCS. It’s hard for these kids to get up every week, you know?”

Rushing said the switch turned on in the second quarter, as quarterback Connor Mire heated up. Mire completed all seven of his passes for 125 yards and three passing touchdowns.

“Connor threw the ball on the money,” Rushing said. “Andrew Beesley, Jardarius Anderson and Craig Bradley made some big plays for us too.”

Beesley recorded two catches for 57 yards, one being for a score. Anderson had two catches for 28 yards, and Bradley had two catches for 22 yards.

Cathedral receiver J.J. Jenkins had a kickoff returned for a touchdown to give Cathedral a commanding 36-6 lead at the half.

Meanwhile, running back Dee Fleming tried to get things going on the ground, and ended the night with 72 yards on 13 carries.

Cathedral linebacker James Allen Coley did not play in the game as he had to get stiches earlier in the week.

“In his absence, I thought Zach Flattmann played great tonight, on both sides really,” Rushing said.

Up next for the Green Wave is a cross-town matchup against Adams County Christian School. Winner of the game will take first place in the district.
