When it comes to all-district honors in girls soccer, not much has changed for Cathedral High School in a new district.

Emma Hogue, Abby Brown and Paige Foster, who all earned all-district honors in the Mississippi High School Activities Association last spring, earned all-district honors in the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools this fall, despite having to rush into the unexpected season.

Because Cathedral High School made the switch in associations, the season changed from the spring to the fall, forcing the girls to set small goals before the season. Despite being caught off guard, the team made it to the playoffs and placed four members on the all-district team.

“I think we had a pretty good outcome after everything we had been through,” Brown said. “Teams got to practice way longer than we did. Everybody says they want to go to state, but we set a goal to win district and we did it. We set a goal to make all-district, which four of us did. That was the rewarding part.”

For Brown, it marks the fifth time in her soccer career that she’s made all-district, while the selection marked the fourth for fellow senior Foster.

Hogue, a junior, made it for the third time, while newcomer Gracie Bertelsen earned her first-ever all-district honors. Bertelsen came to Cathedral from Tupelo High School before the season, and became an integral part of the team from the very beginning. Like her teammates, Bertelsen wasn’t used to playing soccer in the fall.

“It was different,” Bertelsen said. “It feels pretty good to get it coming to a new school.”

This season, Cathedral was unable to overcome the playoff hump, falling to Park Place 4-1 in the opening round of the MAIS playoffs. Cathedral girls soccer has never won a playoff game before, and entering the game, the school had never scored a goal in the postseason.

Hogue changed that late in the game on a breakaway. Little did she know, she made school history.

“I didn’t even really know I was the first person until everybody told me,” Hogue said. “It was a cool thing.”

As Foster and Brown graduate, juniors Hogue and Bertelsen will lead the team next fall. If it’s up to them, not much will change in terms of all-district honors next season.
