FAYETTE — De’Martre Collins accounted for all three of Franklin County’s touchdowns – two rushing and one passing – and Cortney Smith had over 100 yards rushing as the Bulldogs held on for a 20-14 win over the Jefferson County Tigers Friday night in an MHSAA Division 7-3A game.

Collins threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Christmas nearly midway through the first quarter. He had a 16-yard touchdown run less than a minute into the game and his 10-yard scoring run with 1:22 to go until halftime proved to be the difference.

“We started out good. Then we got a little sloppy,” Franklin County head coach Anthony Hart said. “Defense played well. I feel good about our effort overall.”

James Claiborne threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Jaquarious Blake with 4:19 to go in the second quarter and the two-point conversion made it a 14-8 game.

After Collins’ second rushing touchdown made it 20-8 at halftime, Claiborne scored on a 10-yard run near the end of the third quarter. But the Bulldogs’ defense would clamp down in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.

“We didn’t make enough plays,” Jefferson County head coach James Herrington said.

Collins completed nine of 15 passes for 114 yards with the touchdown and one interception. Smith ended up with 109 yards on 32 carries.

“He had a good night. He ran hard. He hit the hole hard,” Hart said.

Claiborne completed 14 of 34 passes for 177 yards and was the Tigers’ leading rusher with 61 yards on 11 carries. Dykavis Ford had six catches for 66 yards.
