JONESVILLE — Davontae Curry had over 200 rushing yards and one touchdown to lead Block High School’s ground game as the host Bears took care of the visiting Gueydan High School Bears 45-0 Friday night in the first round of the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs.

Just like it has been for the majority of the season, it was running back by committee for No. 13 seed Block. And there was not much semblance of a passing game to be found, either. Which was the way interim head coach Bo Sproles liked it.

“We set some goals this week. We were trying for 600 total yards. We finished with over 500 yards,” Sproles said. “We ran our base stuff tonight. We kept it vanilla and real tight. The run game was what we wanted and what we needed.”

Block quarterback Zorian Bowie ran for over 50 yards and a touchdown run and his only pass of the game was a screen pass to Keon Wilkerson that he turned into a 33-yard touchdown. Jacob Duncan ran for over 100 yards with a touchdown and a two-point conversion run.

Freshman Damon Davis also had a touchdown run for Block. Kendarius Jones ran in a two-point conversion run and made four extra points.

Gueydan, the No. 20 seed, had trouble getting its offense going against a stout Block defense. Cameron Stewart led the defense with three sacks while Ronnie Littleton and Ryan Coleman each had a fumble recovery. Tyron Cummings had one interception.

“I’m super, super proud of our defense,” Sproles said. “I played a lot of our younger guys. We use some new techniques on both sides of the ball.”

Block jumped out to a 24-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and the rout was on. It was 31-0 at halftime and the two teams decided to use a running clock for the second half. The host Bears scored 14 points in the third quarter.

Block (4-7) next plays at No. 4 seed Oak Grove at 7 p.m. next Friday in the second round. Oak Grove received a first-round bye.
