BROOKHAVEN — Despite coming up against a Brookhaven Academy team looking to slow down the game as much as possible, the Cathedral Green Wave were able to go on the road and down the Cougars, 41-34.

“I had talked to a couple of coaches and they told me that Brookhaven will hold the ball up to a minute each offensive possession because they aren’t a high scoring team,” Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said. “We jumped out to a six-point lead, then kind of messed around they went to holding it. Literally, we would run 30 to 40 seconds chasing them and then they back cut you.”

Even though possessions were limited, Jardarius Anderson was able to put up 18 points for the Green Wave. William Doss added five and Connor Mire chipped in with four.

Arnold said although the game wasn’t the team’s usual style of play, he was able to take some positives from it.

“When it got to the nitty-gritty we played the right way,” he said. “We just didn’t the whole game. We need more time in the gym, but we are going to get that with eight games in 11 days. We will find out a lot.”

The win pushed the Green Wave to 2-1 on the year.

Cathedral will resume play against Delta Charter tonight at home.

Brookhaven Academy (girls) 47, Cathedral 37

BROOKHAVEN — Natalie Fletcher and Caroline Kaiser each scored 10 points for the Cathedral Lady Wave, but their efforts weren’t enough as Cathedral went down against Brookhaven Academy, 47-37.

“It was very poorly played,” Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said. “We weren’t ourselves. We had so many turnovers in the first half, but in spite of that, we were only behind six at halftime.”

Cathedral was able to tie things up at 32 late in the third, but couldn’t hold on as Brookhaven Academy took control.

“I really thought we would come back and win the game, but we made some bad decisions and it got away from us,” Arnold said. “Any time you go on the road you have to play good, but we played poorly.”

Elizabeth Smith added nine points for the Lady Wave and Lessley Dooley contributed with four.

The Lady Wave are now 1-2 this season.
