FAYETTE — The Jefferson County High School Lady Tigers backed up their recent and stunning upset of Natchez High School with an impressive defensive effort in a 38-15 win over the Crystal Springs High School Lady Tigers Tuesday night.

While Jefferson County had an up-and-down performance when it came to getting shots to fall in each half, its defense was probably the best head coach Flora McKnight has seen in several years.

The host Lady Tigers held the visiting Lady Tigers to no more than five points in any of the four quarters. The outcome could have been even more lopsided had it not been for a seven-point second quarter and a two-point fourth quarter for Jefferson County.

Diamond Smith led the home team with a game-high 12 points and Dea’breaun Turner added 11 points.

Jefferson County (5-1) hosts Natchez High at 6 p.m. Friday.

Block 42, Ferriday 33

FERRIDAY — It’s a rare occurrence when the Block High School Lady Bears steps onto the Ferriday High School gym and come away with a victory over the Lady Trojans. Tuesday night was one of those occurrences.

Ferriday’s youth and inexperience showed in a big way while Block used a tenacious defense to hold the Lady Trojans to single digits in three different quarters as the Lady Bears took a 42-33 win.

Block outscored Ferriday 15-7 in the first quarter and that set the tome for the rest of the game. The Lady Bears went into halftime with a 25-16 lead, but the Lady Trojans tried gallantly to get back in the game in the third quarter. When that quarter, Block held a slim lead at 33-30.

However, the momentum that Ferriday had in the third quarter was nowhere to be seen in the fourth quarter. The Lady Trojans scored just three points. Granted, the Lady Bears did not do much better with nine points, but for them it was enough to hang on for the win.

Anasia Turner led the Lady Trojans with 10 points and LaKeshanna Harris chipped in with nine points. The Lady Bears were led by Aziyah Anderson with a game-high 15 points and Cintina Green with 10 points.

Block (3-2) doesn’t play again until next Tuesday when it hosts Delta Charter School. Ferriday (1-5) host Sicily Island at 6 p.m. Friday.

Trinity Episcopal 51, Silliman Institute 43

CLINTON, La. — D’Asia Mitchell and Tali Beard each nailed four three-pointers in leading the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints to a 51-43 win over the Silliman Institute Lady Wildcats Tuesday night.

Mitchell led all scorers with 19 points and Beard wasn’t too far behind her with 16 points. Only two other players for the Lady Saints got into the scoring column – Dionna Jackson with nine points and Sloane Young with seven points.

Trinity Episcopal jumped out to what should have been a commanding 29-10 halftime advantage, but Silliman got hot in the second half and pulled to within four points at 47-43 before the Lady Saints made their free throws late in the game.

Trinity Episcopal (6-2) next plays on Monday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. when it hosts MAIS Class AAAA Oak Forest Academy.

Cathedral 48, Laurel Christian School 12

LAUREL — Marty Lewis finished with 12 points and Caroline Kaiser had 10 points as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave defeated the Laurel Christian School Lady Lions 48-12 Tuesday night in an MAIS District 4-AAA game.

Cathedral scored nearly all of its points in a one-sided first half. The Lady Green Wave put up 29 points while holding Laurel Christian to just six points in the first quarter. A 13-2 advantage in the second quarter gave Cathedral a 42-8 lead.

But the third quarter could be called head-scratching to say the least. Laurel Christian scored its only point of the quarter at the free-throw line while, somehow, Cathedral did not score a single point. The fourth quarter was a little better, but not much, as the Lady Green Wave outscored the Lady Lions 6-3.

Cathedral (6-2, 1-1) plays host to District 4-AAA opponent Adams County Christian School at 6 p.m. Thursday.
