VIDALIA — Bre’Honor Harris, Jalyn Smith and Bri’anna Tolliver each scored in double figures for the Vidalia Lady Vikings in a 51-19 blowout win over the Sicily Island Lady Tigers Tuesday night.

Harris led all scorers with 17 points while Smith and Tolliver each finished with 10 points. Lady Vikings head coach Christen West said she was proud of the way her team played on both ends of the court from the opening tip to the final whistle.

“The girls played hard. They stuck to the game plan. They executed the game plan and we got the win,” West said. “They played confident and poised, and they played four quarters.”

Sicily Island was unable to get much going offensively. The only player who came close to scoring in double figures for the Lady Tigers was Aniyah Brown, who finished with nine points.

Vidalia jumped out an 11-2 lead after one quarter of play and didn’t take long to extend its lead to double digits. The Lady Vikings took a 25-7 lead into halftime and then they outscored the Lady Tigers 13-6 in each of the final two quarters.

“It was a team, effort but all of my seniors, all of my leaders stepped up — Bre’Honor Harris, Bri’anna Tolliver, Jalyn Smith (a junior),” West said. “Ebony Walker came off the bench and gave us a spark. All of my freshman came off the bench and played well.”

Another junior who played well for the Lady Vikings was Shae Thomas, who ended up with eight points.

Vidalia (3-10) will take on Tensas High School Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the Ferriday Tournament.

Sicily Island boys 50, Vidalia 47

VIDALIA — Just when it looked like the Vidalia Vikings were about to pull off an upset over undefeated Sicily Island, the Tigers had other ideas as they rallied in the fourth quarter to escape with a 50-47 win Tuesday night.

A high-scoring first quarter ended with Vidalia holding on to a 20-18 lead. Then it looked like the Vikings were going to take control after outscoring the Tigers 10-4 in the second quarter for a 30-22 halftime lead.

But as Vidalia head coach Robert Sanders said after the game, his team played just the opposite in the second half of the way it did in the first half.

“We kinda got away from what we did in the first half. We were shooting too many 3s. When we got inside, we missed some lay-ups. We missed too many free throws. Their man defense gave us a little trouble as well,” Sanders said.

In the first half, Vidalia got the ball to their post players, Demarco Brown and Curtis McNulty. Brown finished with a game-high 18 points and McNulty had 12 points, but most of those were before halftime.

The Vikings also had a hard time guarding Sicily Island’s duo of Tyreke Tolliver and Devion Dunbar. Tolliver scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half when the Vikings did a much better job on Dunbar after halftime. Dunbar had 15 points, the majority of them in the first half.

“We played them much better than we did the first time we played them,” Sanders said.

Sicily Island (7-0) will next play at the Ferriday Tournament, which begins Thursday. Vidalia (3-6) will take on West Monroe at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Madison Parish Tournament.
