“It was an all-around good effort,” Trinity coach Faye Minor said. “We had good team play, and we passed the ball real well.”

Sloane Young led the way with a game-high 18 points.

“I was feeling the adrenaline, and it was good to get my groove going,” Young said.

Meanwhile, Jasmine Ivory scored 15 points, Talie Beard registered 13, and D’Asia Mitchel scored 11.

“We played more together as a team more than what we’ve been playing,” Young said. “We knew moved and execute our plays.”

Trinity (13-4, 3-0) jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start then game, then blitzed the visitors with a flurry of fast-break points to boost its advantage to 26-5 at the end of the first quarter.

“We worked on (our fast break) in practice,” Minor explained. “We have a drill just for that, and I think they did a great job of passing the ball.”

The Lady Saints led at the half 41-13, and 60-23 after the third quarter.

“Expectations are a lot higher now,” Young said. “(Tuesday) showed how we can play as a team, and how we thought we could potentially play.”

Ja’Mescya Queen had four points off the bench while Rearnna Mayberry chipped in with two.

“It’s very rare that everyone gets to play, and that’s the fun part of it,” Minor said. “But what I liked about it, when they got in to play, they all responded. That’s what you’re going to need to get into the playoffs.”

Trinity will be back in action Friday when it travels to Porter’s Chapel.

“This is a really exciting win,” Minor said. “This was a district win for us, and it’s going to give us momentum going into the playoffs.”

Clinton Christian (boys) 45,

Trinity 44

David Jackson’s half-court heave at the final whistle sailed long as Clinton Christian Academy escaped with a 45-44 win over Trinity Episcopal Day School.

“I thought our effort was great, especially towards the end,” Trinity boys coach Chris Bunio said.

The Saints (8-4, 2-1) started out sluggish, being outscored 10-2 in the game’s opening moments.

“I think we were a little unsure of ourselves early in the game, and that kind of hurt their confidence,” Bunio said. “We missed a lot of shots, but I think as the game progressed they got into a groove.”

Trailing by two points late in the second period, the Saints charged back with eight straight points to cut the halftime deficit to 22-20.

“I told them to be patient, to take the open shots and not to force anything,” Bunio said. “They weren’t really passing enough to get the open shot. They were just forcing themselves into a shot they thought was a high percentage, and it just wasn’t.”

Trinity entered the final period trailing 32-26, but a barrage of 3-pointers from Jackson and Kevontaye Caston gave the Saints a chance to win on the game’s final play.

Trinity made eight 3-pointers for the game.

Caston led the Saints with 17 points while Jackson recorded 16.

Trinity will be back action at 6 p.m. Thursday when it travels to Royal Ambassadors.

“(Clinton) took over for first place in the division,” Bunio said. “As long as we take care of the other district and we beat them by more than one point, then we’ll be good to go.”
