Boys roundup: Jones’ big game lifts Wilkinson to win

MEADVILLE — Travion Jones scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to go with seven assists in leading Wilkinson County to a 62-49 win over Franklin County in an MHSAA Region 7-3A game Friday night.

“It was a tough game,” Wilkinson County coach Julius Anderson said. “We got out early, and we got some players some (region) experience.”

The Wildcats led Franklin County 18-12 at the end of the first quarter before picking up the defensive intensity in the second quarter. And that in turn led to a 20-5 advantage over the Bulldogs for a 38-17 lead at halftime.

Jalen Dogan led the Bulldogs with 13 points and Tony Gibbs added 12 points.

Wilkinson County (11-3, 2-0) next plays at Port Gibson at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday.

Jefferson County 67,

Port Gibson 59 (OT)

PORT GIBSON — Jefferson County outscored Port Gibson 32-10 in the fourth period to force overtime and eventually emerge with a 67-59 win.

As to what happened in that bizarre fourth quarter, Tigers head coach Marcus Walton said, “We finally located on defense and got on-the-ball pressure. They refused to quit, and they believed in the program and in the system.”

Walton said everybody who played stepped up for the Tigers and that it would be hard to single out one or two players.

“It was a great team effort,” he said. “Once we got to overtime, we knew our conditioning would take over. We played with a lot of heart.”

Christian Day led Jefferson County with a game-high 27 points. Josh Day had 18 points and Akeem Williams added 13 points.

Jefferson County (8-8, 2-0) hosts Region 7-3A foe Hazlehurst at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Trinity Episcopal 60, Porter’s Chapel Academy 32

VICKSBURG — Kevontaye Caston led Trinity Episcopal with a game-high 20 points as the Saints rolled past Porter’s Chapel Academy 60-32 in MAIS District 5-AA action Friday night.

Demond Fleming scored 11 points and C.J. Chatman poured in nine points for the Saints.

Trinity Episcopal (8-4, 3-1) hosts Adams County Christian School at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

ACCS 51, Laurel Christian School 29

NATCHEZ — Devin Spear had 15 points and Andrew Ratcliff contributed with 10 points as Adams County Christian School notched a 51-29 win over Laurel Christian School in a MAIS District 4-AAA game.

ACCS (11-6, 3-4) plays host to Riverfield Academy at 6:30 p.m. today.

Wingfield 74, Natchez High 54

JACKSON — Robert Washington scored 19 points and Tyric Jackson added 15 points to lead four Wingfield players in double figures as the Falcons defeated Natchez High 74-54 in MHSAA Region 6-5A action Friday night.

Jadarious Ivory led the Bulldogs with a game-high 21 points and Taylor Chasley had 11 points.

Natchez High (3-9, 0-2) next plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Provine High School in Jackson.

Vidalia 49, Buckeye 36

BUCKEYE, La. — Demarco Brown led Vidalia with 15 points and Malik Jefferson had 11 points as the Vikings defeated Buckeye 49-36 Friday night in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.

Desmond Bindon chipped in with 10 points for the Vikings, who held Buckeye to just six points in both the third and fourth quarters after being up just 27-24 at halftime.

Vidalia (8-10, 3-1) plays host to Peabody 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
