Mechanic savings could be significant

Adams County supervisors may be many things, but being timid isn’t one of them.

We applaud supervisors for working to get information from the Natchez-Adams County Port Commission and applying a bit of common sense to the port’s operations.

Supervisors, frustrated by a lack of information, appointed themselves to the port commission as additional members. That move seems to be proving to be a good one, at least in shedding some light on the port’s operations.

County supervisors earlier this week questioned how the port commission spends so much on contracted mechanic labor.

Supervisor David Carter said he calculated the daily average being spent on contracted mechanics to be approximately $680 per day.

That’s an enormously high amount to us.

Like the supervisors, we think it would be wise for the port commission to fully and openly explore how the port might use the county’s existing mechanics to perform port mechanical services whenever possible.

The annual savings could be significant and the port’s function should be to profitably serve local industries. If it can improve its profit margin without compromising safety, the commissioners should have the fiduciary responsibility to do so.
