NATCHEZ — Natchez High School Public Relations Coordinator Steven Richardson said Tuesday through an email the school will formally introduce its new head football coach at a later date.

The announcement was originally scheduled for Tuesday’s booster club meeting, but the meeting was postponed due to possible severe weather.

Principal Ernest “Tony” Fields said Tuesday the coach’s name could be publicly released as soon as today.

Henry Garner previously oversaw the Natchez football program as the interim head coach for the 2015 season. Natchez principal Ernest “Tony” Fields said Garner decided to step down after discussions with his family regarding consideration for the job.

“(Garner) thought about it and once he had talked it over with his family he came to the conclusion that he just wasn’t interested in the job full time,” Fields said. “I respect him for that.”

Natchez High School went 4-7 in its 2015 campaign and 3-4 in Region 3-5A.

Fields said previously the criteria for the hire was to find a coach who could give Natchez some longevity and was a “visionary” regarding the type of offense the team would run.

Fields noted he has high expectations for the team in the 2016 season.

“We’re looking forward to having (quarterback) Chris Scott and a number of players coming back,” Fields said last week.
