NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School overcame two large deficits to come back and top Bowling Green School 19-12 in the opening game of a doubleheader Thursday night.

The Rebels trailed 7-0 heading to the bottom of the first inning and 13-5 heading to the bottom of the third.

“I was pretty upset being down 7-0 right off the bat,” ACCS coach Matthew Freeman said. “I knew my guys could battle back, and they did. We just made too many mental errors, and we have to have better at-bats.”

One of the key plate appearances came in the bottom of the second when Caden Gillespie launched a two-run home run over the left field wall. The homer trimmed the Rebels deficit to 7-5.

Bowling Green, however, managed to extend its advantage to eight in the top half of the third with a six-run inning. In that rally, the Buccaneers were aided by a slew of Rebel miscues, including three errors.

But ACCS didn’t blink.

Instead, the Rebels responded with nine runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 14-12 advantage and never looked back.

“They helped us out with some errors themselves,” Freeman said.

Pitcher Jace Calcote, who recorded three shutout innings in relief, helped spearhead the comeback.

“I was really proud of Jace,” Freeman said. “He came into the game, and that was the first time he’s pitched this year — he’s been busy with basketball and soccer — so I didn’t have him that much … He came in there and threw really good for me.”

Gillespie added another RBI on a fielder’s choice. Christopher White recorded a pair of RBIs, while Brady Bean, Devin Gray and Cole Gatlin each recorded RBI hits.

“I’m looking for us to get better and better as we head into district play,” Freeman said. “We have a really tough district this year, and I just want to see us be able to compete to the best of our abilities when we get to those games.”

ACCS 20, Bowling Green 10

In Game 2, Adams County Christian School scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to run-rule Bowling Green 20-10.

In that rally, Christopher White launched a three-run homer and Gatlin roped a two-run double.

Andrew Porter tossed one inning in relief.

With the sweep, ACCS moves to 2-1 on the year.

“I’m proud of my team for staying focus,” Freeman said. “It was a long (Thursday) — we played 6.5 hours, but we kept battling and fighting. It’s a good way to start off the year.”

ACCS will host Trinity Episcopal at 4 and 6 p.m. Monday.
