THIBODAUX, La. —Vidalia High School knew they were going to have their hands full with a strong E.D. White team Friday night in the first round of the LHSAA Class 3A playoffs.

The No. 10 seeded Cardinals beat the No. 24 seeded Vikings 61-54, and Vidalia coach Robert Sanders said he felt the officiating throughout the game wasn’t up to par.

“They had 24 free throws and we had five and we lost by seven. It was a one-sided ball game,” Vidalia head coach Robert Sanders said. “We would just touch their players and they would blow the whistle. They would push our players and they (the referees) would call nothing.”

Even with the big discrepancy in free throws attempted, the game was close throughout. E.D. White was up 11-10 on Vidalia after one quarter of play. The second quarter featured the largest scoring margin between the two teams. The Cardinals put up 16 points while the Vikings had 11 points to E.D. White a 27-21 halftime lead.

The third quarter was close, but E.D. White had the 12 to 10 advantage for a 39-32 lead. The fourth quarter was an offensive explosion as Vidalia had 23 points while the Cardinals had 22 points.

“We just had to keep calming down. It was just frustrating,” Sanders said. “Julius Wilson fouled out with a minute left, but he was getting hot in the fourth quarter. We had another on the verge of fouling out in Jarred Turner. It was hard to keep them from getting too frustrated.”

Turner as well as Desmond Bindon led the Vikings with 13 points each while Wilson finished with 11 points. Kevin Johnson led E.D. White with a game-high 29 points and Winston Jones added 12 points.

Vidalia, the runner-up in District 3-3A, finished with an overall record of 16-13.

Block 62, Delhi Charter 59

JONESVILLE — A.J. Barber led Block High School with a game-high 27 points and Terris Evans added 18 points as the Bears held on for a 62-59 win over the Delhi Charter School Gators Friday night in the first round of the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs.

“The boys played hard. I had a couple of my starters out sick. I had to keep subbing tonight,” Block head coach Jeffrey Odom said. “They represented their school and their community well.”

The margin of victory should not have been as close as it ended up being. Block, the No. 11 seed, played good defense in the first three quarters, including holding Delhi Charter to just nine points in the third quarter for a 46-36 lead.

But the No. 22 seeded Gators would not go away quietly. Led by Jalen Lockett and Trayveon Houston, they put up 23 points in the fourth quarter. Delhi could not make quite enough stops to pull of the upset as the Bears scored 16 points. Lockett finished with 19 points and Houston had 10 points.

Block (14-12) will next play in the second round at No. 6 seed Grambling High School at a day and time to be determined. Grambling defeated No. 27 seed East Beauregard 65-51.

Florien 78, Monterey 34

FLORIEN, La. — The 24th-seeded Monterey High School Wolves saw their season come to an end Friday night as they lost to the No. 9 Florien High School Blackcats 78-34 in the first round of the LHSAA Class B Playoffs.

“We played a very good basketball team. They made their shots. They made us play a style of basketball that we’ve struggled against all season,” Monterey head coach Eric Richard said. “They forced us into some turnovers. We had a young team that was competitive.”

Monterey, which finished fourth in District 5-B, had an overall record of 11-16.
