vidalia — A 10-run second inning explosion proved to be the difference for Vidalia High School as it topped Block High School 13-8 in baseball action.

“The bats have slowly been coming around,” Vidalia coach Kale Davis said. “A 10-run inning, you have to be happy about that; you don’t see that too often, but we’re just trying it together.”

The Vikings (4-0) were led offensively by Chandler Grayson and Cole Cangemi. The two seniors combined to reach base seven times and drive in five runs.

Despite the win, Cangemi said there is still plenty of growth his squad can make.

“We still have a lot of stuff to work on,” Cangemi said. “I’m not knocking our competition, but it’s not what we’re going to face in district — which is going to be a lot of tougher … Our sticks are working really well, but we still have a lot of stuff we have to work on.”

Perhaps Cangemi’s loudest hit came in the bottom of the sixth when he roped a one-hop double off the left field wall that scored a run.

“I kind of thought I got that one (for a home run),” Cangemi said. “I was watching it, and I was hoping, but I was still running; it’s hard to judge on these fields now.”

Vidalia also received a big boost from pitcher from Jacob Wilson who tossed five strong innings in relief.

“He pitched last week at the Block tournament where he did real well,” Davis said. “He came (Monday) and did real well. Senior leadership, you look for him to come and settle things down, and he did a good of coming in relief.”

Block managed to jump out to a 4-0 advantage after a four-run top of the second. However, an injury to starting pitcher Brennon Lippman forced Block coach Stevie McCarthy to go to his bench much earlier than he would have liked.

“I was expecting to go four or five (innings) with him,” McCarthy said. “And that kind of threw a wrench into everything, and that happens.”

Hunter McEntyre recorded three RBIs for the Bears (2-3), while Noah Odom, Jayden Ivey and Ronnie Littleton each added run-scoring hits.

Jacob Fannin paced Block with three hits, including a double, and drove in a run off the bench.

“He’s a senior, so he’s supposed to do that,” McEntyre said. “We held our own. In the second inning they scored 10 runs, and it’s hard to overcome that.”

Cameron Rodgers had a two-RBI single during the Vikings’ rally in the second.

Vidalia and Block will both be back in action this weekend when it takes part in the Monterey tournament.
